Walker & Lara, and Anaheim

I've just completed the current draft of Walker and Lara's novella. It's not yet final, but it's getting there. I'm hoping to work on it further on the flight to Anaheim - it'll be good to do a read-through start to finish.

Talking of Anaheim, I'm looking forward to seeing some of you on Wednesday! Full details of the super-duper gigantic book signing here.

You might have noticed we've made some changes to the blog - I hope you all like! Please test out the comments - they should be working fine, but if not, shoot me an email (nalinisinghwrites AT gmail DOT com).

And in the spirit of comment testing, here's a tough question for you: Shapeshifter or vampire? Reasons?

Shape Shifter!!! To be able to be something more than the confines of your body, to escape into a more primitive mind... Just sounds amazing.

Shapeshifter - to be able to change who you are and then back again would be great!

Definitly shapeshifter - I would favor to be a tiger-shifter. No climbing for me (afreight of heights) but swimming. ;-)

Thats a really hard question. I guess it depends on who the shapeshifter or vampire is.But I am going to go with shapeshifter due to all the cool ones in your books!

Blog looks awesome....;)
Hmm, I'll go with shifters. I think it's all that passion, shifters always feels everything much more, beast/human internal struggle, sense of loyalty, pack...
Vamps are perfect heroes- strong, mysterious, seductive. There are so many fiction vamp heroes with various abilities, but I think of them as this cold, ancient, practical, easily bored creatures of the night, so author have to convince me that woman/man they fall in love is someone special for them, something they haven't come across in their years of existence. That is something I find lacking in PR/UF in recent years. But, I adore Dimitri, he is my favorite vamp.

first and foremost I'd like to say the change you made on your blog is great. Vampires or shapeshifters? hmm... dmitri, venom, naasir, noel whom you have introduced in the guild hunter series or lucas, hawke, dorian, riaz, riley, andrew whom are in the psy changeling series.... it is really hard to make a decision but i can't help but fall in love with the changelings/shapeshifters.

I love the changes to the blog.

Umm, vampire. Because I fell in love with them first and you wouldn't have to worry about dominance and things of that nature

Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3...

Shifter or vampire? Such a tough choice. I suppose in general I'd lean toward vampires, but it's a fine line. I love the primal nature of shifters, the incorporation of animal traits into a human personality, and the multitude of possibilities having two forms brings.

Vampires are great because feeding presents a lot of opportunities for conflict and intimacy (sometimes both at the same time). I also love love love reading various takes on vampire origins. Separate species? Transmittable disease? Curse? Genetically engineered? Bring 'em on and get creative!

*double take*

Oh, hi.

Erm... yes, the question.

If it's your characters, shapeshifters hands down.

I love the duality of their natures and the universe you've created for them.

The blog looks great Nalini. I think I would have to go with shifter because 1. I can't do blood sorry no appeal there for me. 2. I think it would be cool to be able to turn into a giant wolf or big cat like a leopard, tiger, or jaguar and experience the world through their eyes.

G. Singh said...

oh man, this is such a tough decision, I love both of them and they each have they're good points...

I love the primal aspect of shifters, they hold their animal so close to them, and it's just gah...no words for it..And plus there is their ability to shift into animals, that's always a plus.

That said, I think I'm going to have to go with vampires...because while they may not be primal, they are predatory creatures, so they, most often, will end up having their personality moulded in such a way to fit that. This is as opposed to some shifters who won't necessarily be predatory, and may not be all that kick-butt action when it comes to fighting...granted they are still part animals, and any animal will fight when pushed into a corner...but Vampires can trump them.

And ... there is the biting XD...

So yes I will have to pick Vampires (it sucks that they have to deal with the whole living for eternity option...and watching those around them die T_T )

* their...I'm so embarrassed I made that typo :S

It really depends on the world-building and characterizations. I do have better luck finding a variety of storylines involving shapeshifters.

Common vamp storylines use the same old tropes involving mortality issues, her blood is the sweetest he's ever tasted, and he hasn't felt this way in 500 years yadda yadda yadda.

How about angels? I would love to find a some good Fae stories. Sorry. I digress.

I'll read anything you write. ;o)

New blogform looks great, but I do wish it didn't insist on opening a new tab when I want to read or add to comments. I can't refer back to your post if I want to check a detail.

As to your question,
I've always wished I was a shape shifter, from the first time I read the concept in a fairytale (or maybe I saw it on Tv). So Vampires can't compete with that king of long term dream, and I think there are too many drawbacks besides (the biggest being that I love food in all it's endless variety, I'd hate being stuck with just one foodsource forever) I want to fly! And if I can't fly I want to swim. And If I can't swim I want to climb and sneak. But flying would be better... A crow maybe, big enough to take care of itself but not unusual enough to stand out, and equally at home in an urban or wilderness setting.

shapeshifter...they aren't cold and can share a meal. : )

Shapeshifter for many reasons, most being no funny teeth,no blood(mostly)and usually the ability to into an awesome animal.Love Hawke!

as much as i like to swoon over the immortal love that Vamps have i would have to say Shapeshifter. This is mainly because the idea of living in this world forever frightens me and also because i love how Shapeshifters can have such contrasting personalities and reflect their animals so deeply. Plus it would be nice to have such a clear cut, no subterfuge, playful family like the Snow Dancers. Always wanted a big family. Thanks Nalini for writing two such amazing worlds to live in! TJ

Love the blog.

Real tough question....love them both. Why the question? Would you care to elaborate? ;)

Shapeshifters all the way! Even though both vampires and shapeshifters are figments of the imagination, I somehow find shapeshifters more 'human' than vampires. I actually can suspend belief and believe in a warped evolutionary process for shapeshifters - for vamps? Not so much...

I've never warmed up to vampires, and the idea of drinking blood as sustenance repulses me *shudder* But that's a personal preference.

If you haven't checked out 'Teen Wolf' on MTV, you should totally see it - cute, funny, and quite poignant. It easily beats the vampire shows on tv these days.

I don't like to be the idea of being a slave to someone for 100 years, and I think it'd be awesome to be able to shapeshift.. Despite that sometimes the idea of living for a very long time seems amazing. It drives me crazy to know that I won't be there to see how everything turns out, what will happen in the future etc. >_< So.. Vampire it is. Despite 100 years of possible slavery. o.ô

Sarah A. said...

Shapeshifter all the way! Having to drink blood just has no appeal and if your a shapeshifter you get to change into some amazing. Anyways being a slave for a hundred years just doesn't sound pleasant. Also vampires can't have kids after they hit the age of two hundred while Shapeshifters can have kids for as long as they live even if it is difficult becoming pregnant. Shapeshifters just seem the better option of the two.

Damn this such a hard decision.....
Lucas or Dimitri
Hawke or Venom
Dorian or Nassir
Riley or Noel........
Drew, Riaz, Barker, Clay even Kit.

Im thinking Shapeshifter!
Gotta love those Changelings!!!!

Shapeshifters no doubt! They are warm, both physically and mentally! Yet, I think they even gain more of my vote after having read Psy/Changeling and finding soo-oo many loveable characters!

My greatest dream is to see one of dragon shapeshifters coming from your imagination though ;p!

Generally speaking, I have to go with shifters. Shifters tend to be more down to earth, family oriented, and in a way less complicated. They usually know what they want and go for it, instead of fighting matings and getting lost in the self-pitying woe-is-me that vampire characters tend to dwell on. Being close to their animal side means they usually follow their instincts, which are much more black and white. You know where you stand with a shifter. Much easier to deal with whatever situation they are in when things are clear.

One good example of this are the bear shifters in Shelly Laurenston's Pride series, such as Bo Novikov from the book Beast Behaving Badly. That is one OCD and grumpy, anti-social shifter if I've ever seen one. But he is so close to his animal sides (polar bear/lion hybrid) it is downright adorable. You cannot resist the big guy.

The same can be said, but in a more serious manner, for the shifters in Psy-Changeling. For the most part (with only a few perplexing and maddening exceptions), these guys know what they want and go for it. No feeling sorry for themselves, no apologies. Their mates know where they stand for the most part, and there are no unnecessary mind games.

That being said, one of my favorite heroes of all time is Malkom Slaine from the book Demon from the Dark (Immortals After Dark series) by Kresley Cole. I think the reason I liked him so much is that he acted on his instincts, almost as a shifter, even though he was a vemon (vampire/demon hybrid).

So, I guess you could say that while my choice tends to go on the side of shifters, there are some vampire characters that win me over. The key here is the emo factor. The less emo and more shifter-like the vampire is, the more I like him.

Hi,

Shapeshifters hands down!

Why... hum good question... I guess it's mostly that I don't care much for vampires (interestingly enough I was ok with vampires before they became so popular . I haven't read GH yet (I like Psy-Changeling so much I just might give GH a try) so this is for the general vampires :
1st - they're dead
2 - (originally at least) they're evil or at least predators to humans (my species)
3 - no sunlight (originally at least)
...etc.

Shana_haine said...

shape-shifters.
why?
well vamps are undead,
shifters are not.
well i guess thats about it, i just feel like shifters are closer to human, so i have taken a liking of them for that reason.
Plus, history of the vampires existence more or less steam from devil/evil, its kinda of a turn off for me...
i prefer predators over pale sun-shy guys.
