Wolf Rain ARC Contest

Contest Closed

WOLF RAIN ARC CONTEST
(International entries welcome)

If you'd like to go in the random draw to win one of 5 Advanced Reading/Review Copies of Wolf Rain (out June 4th), send an e-mail to naliniDOTassistantATgmailDOTcom (replace DOT/AT with symbols ./@), with:

Wolf Rain ARC Contest in the subject line AND your name and shipping address in the body of the email (entries without names and shipping addresses will be disqualified).

By 10pm, April 9th, 2019, New Zealand time.

Please follow the correct format for entry re the subject line, so your e-mail goes into the right in-box. (Your e-mail address will only be used to contact you should you win, and your mailing address will only be used to post out the ARC to you should you win.)

Since this is an Advanced Review Copy, if you win, we'd ask that you please post a review somewhere before the release date (June 4th) - on a blog, on Amazon, B&N, Goodreads...it's up to you, but it would be much appreciated if you'd post your thoughts somewhere. The contents of the review are, of course, totally up to you.

A note about the ARC - it's substantially the same as the final book, but since ARCs are printed prior to the final round of edits, there are some errors in the text that aren't in the final book.

- Nalini & Ashwini :-)

The fine print: Contest is open internationally. One entry per household. No purchase necessary to enter. Winners will be chosen randomly using random.org and emailed on 10th April 2019 NZT. Their names will also be posted on this blog at that time. Void where prohibited.

A Madness of Sunshine

My debut thriller releases at the end of this year and I'm beyond excited to share the blurb and cover with you today! (There are absolutely no paranormal elements in this book - I want to make that clear so you're not disappointed. But if you like a little noir with your mystery, check it out.)

This GORGEOUS cover is by the incredibly talented Rita Frangie, Senior Art Director of Berkley.

A Madness of Sunshine
Nalini Singh

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh welcomes you to a remote town on the edge of the world where even the blinding brightness of the sun can’t mask the darkness that lies deep within a killer…

On the rugged West Coast of New Zealand, Golden Cove is more than just a town where people live. The adults are more than neighbors; the children, more than schoolmates.

That is until one fateful summer—and several vanished bodies—shatters the trust holding Golden Cove together. All that’s left are whispers behind closed doors, broken friendships, and a silent agreement not to look back. But they can’t run from the past forever.

Eight years later, a beautiful young woman disappears without a trace, and the residents of Golden Cove wonder if their home shelters something far more dangerous than an unforgiving landscape.

It’s not long before the dark past collides with the haunting present and deadly secrets come to light.

USA/Canada: December 3rd (Ebook, hardcover, audio)

International: TBA

Covers Coming Soon

Some cool cover news. Unexpectedly, I have two covers near reveal stage at the same time. My debut thriller cover will be coming this week (!!) and the ARCHANGEL'S WAR cover will be ready for the April newsletter. (The GH covers generally take longer to finalize because of the artwork, and this one is just astonishing.) I can't wait to share both covers with you. :-)

Christchurch, New Zealand

Most of you will be aware of the terrible event that happened in Christchurch yesterday. So many people lost their lives and so many are fighting for theirs. As a country, New Zealand is in mourning. To know such hate could come here, to this kind and gentle country, it's shaken us all down to the core. Each and every one of us is thinking of the people most directly affected and doing what we can to help, even if all we can do is donate funds to help the survivors.
I'm going to quote words spoken by our Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern here, because she speaks for all NZ when she says: "...we were not a target because we are a safe harbour for those who hate. We were not chosen for this act of violence because we condone racism, because we’re an enclave for extremism, we were chosen for the very fact that we are none of these things, because we represent diversity, kindness, compassion, a home for those that share our values, a refuge for those who need it. And those values, I can assure you, will not and cannot be shaken by this attack."
At times like this, it's hard to know what to on blogs like this, where it's all about celebrating something we love - reading and books. It can feel frivolous to talk books when such a terrible event has occurred. But the thing with terrorists is that they want us to stop doing what we love. They want to make us afraid. They want us to focus on them. We're not going to do that.
This blog will continue to run with posts celebrating what we love, will continue to be a friendly and safe place where we uplift each other. Books are a haven for many of us, and we're not going to let that be taken away by those who would spread darkness in the world.
With all my love to all of you. ❤️

Paying it Forward Recipients

Thank you all the NZ based writers who wrote in for my Pay It Forward initiative. I received far more emails than I expected, and it was incredibly difficult for me to make a decision - I wish I could send all of you to the RWNZ conference. As it was, I crunched the numbers and decided I could send two people. Both of this year's recipients have been notified. If you aren't one of them, please do try again next year. In the meantime, I hope you continue to nurture your writing dreams, and remember - while conferences are wonderful learning opportunities, there are also small writers groups throughout the country, as well as active groups online, where you can start to build your writing tribe. ❤️

Paying it forward

When I was a university student, my mum paid for me to go to my very first Romance Writers of New Zealand conference after we saw a little write-up about it in our local paper. I was working part time around my studies, but there was no way I could've afforded to go to the conference on my own.

Attending had a profound impact on my life - not only did I learn so much, for the first time, I'd found my tribe. Other people who understood the need to tell a story, who valued the journey of the human heart and adored romances, and who spoke to the people in their head!
I've always wanted to pay my mum's kindness forward, so this year, I'd like to send one New Zealand-based writer to the 2019 RWNZ Conference, to be held in Christchurch.
I'd like this to go to a FIRST TIMER, someone who's never had a chance to attend a national writing conference but would love to go. So if you know someone like that in New Zealand, please share the information with them. You don't have to be a romance writer, but you have to respect the romance genre and the people who work in it.
Here's what I'll cover:
- economy class flights from anywhere in New Zealand to Christchurch (if you're close to Christchurch, I'll cover your petrol/parking, or train/bus costs)
- conference registration for the "Love and Other Journeys" conference, to be held by RWNZ from the 23rd of August 2019 to the 25th of August 2019, including the awards dinner
- if you're not a member of RWNZ already, I'll throw in a year's membership
- $50/day for expenses (the conference already provides morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea)
- accommodation in the conference hotel for 4 nights from Thursday 22 August to Sunday 25th August inclusive. If the conference hotel is booked out, I'll pay for any nearby accommodation you can find in a similar price range.
(You'll be responsible for making all the bookings/registrations yourself).
If you'd like to be considered, just drop me an email with "RWNZ Conference 2019" in the subject line, telling me a little about yourself and your reasons why you'd like to attend. Since I know writers like to write, try to keep it to around 300 words or so.  Email: nalinisinghwritesATgmail DOTcom
This isn't an official scholarship, just one writer paying it forward, so I'll read through all the replies, and choose the one that resonates most with me. I'm sure it'll be a very hard decision for me, but I do hope to do this again next year, so please try again if you miss out this year.
Dates: Emails must be in to me by Saturday March 2nd 2019 at 5pm. I'll email the recipient back by end of day March 10th 2019. If I don't hear from them within 72 hours, I'll choose someone else. Also, if you're the recipient, you can keep your name private if you wish - or you can feel free to out yourself.
Good luck.

UK peeps: A few of you have told me that Archangel’s Prophecy is showing up as awaiting publication on Waterstones, and as shipping in 1-2 months on Amazon UK. I’ve followed up with my publisher and been told that this is as a result of a warehouse move not going smoothly. 😣The publisher is working to fix it by this weekend so the books can start shipping - I’ll update you once I get an update. I’m sorry everyone. The good news is that the ebook and audiobook are available if you don’t want to wait.

SPOILER ZONE: Archangel's Prophecy

Thread Closed

For the first time in the over ten-year history of this blog, a spoiler thread is being shut down. I don't monitor the spoiler threads, and generally run a very relaxed and hands-off comment policy, far more so than many authors. However, as it is my blog, I have a trusted friend who keeps an eye on the comments to ensure no reader is being impolite to another, as everyone should feel welcome to post.

There have been any number of highly critical comments about my books left on the blog over the years. All have been left up as I've always encouraged a vibrant discussion. I do, however, expect everyone to act like adults and to discuss the book (however critical that discussion may be), not resort to insulting me personally. Unfortunately, it appears this simple expectation of politeness is too much for some - yet regardless of this, the thread was allowed to continue. However, the lack of civility has now bled over into comments directed at fellow readers, and that is something I will not countenance.

As a result, and because I've been told there is little to no actual book discussion happening, I've made the call to close the thread. Comments have not been deleted but have been put into hibernation because no author should be expected to host such behavior on their own blog. It makes the space toxic for everyone, including readers.

My apologies to those of you who wanted a discussion space to talk about the characters and the storyline. The Facebook spoiler group will run to the end of November, and there are multiple unofficial fan groups online where you can discuss the book. I am not a member of any of them, so I can't recommend one over the other, but I'm guessing most of them have their own rules and they're probably much stricter than mine. So please go into those spaces with respect for the people who created them.

_____________________

This is the dedicated *spoiler* thread for Archangel's Prophecy and earlier books in the series. Spoilers abound, so be warned!!

Usual rules: be kind to your fellow commenters and have fun. This spoiler thread will remain active as long as the blog does, so you can join in at any time. :-)

I don't monitor the thread for questions, so if you have a Q for me, you can email me (nalinisinghwrites AT gmail DOT com).

REBEL HARD

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh continues her Hard Play series with a sweet, sexy romance featuring big, fat, OTT weddings, a meddling grandma, and a too-serious hero who needs to be unbuttoned…

Nayna Sharma agreed to an arranged marriage in the hope it would heal the fractures in her beloved family… only to realize too late that a traditional marriage is her personal nightmare. Panicked, she throws caution to the winds, puts on the tiniest dress she can find, and ends up in the arms of a tall, rough-edged hunk of a man who has abs of steel—and who she manages to mortally insult between one kiss and the next.

Abandoned as a child, then adopted into a loving family, Raj Sen believes in tradition, in continuity. Some might call him stiff and old-fashioned, but he knows what he wants—and it’s a life defined by rules… yet he can’t stop thinking about the infuriating and sexy woman who kissed him in the moonlight then disappeared. When his parents spring an introduction on him, the last woman he expects is her. Beautiful. Maddening. A rule breaker in the making.

He’s all wrong for her. She’s all wrong for him. And love is about to make rebels of them both.

ADVANCED EXCERPT from REBEL HARD
by Nalini Singh

When they walked into the grand wedding hall side by side, Nayna saw all eyes go to Madhuri. She wanted to smile. That was the way it had always been and would probab— Her thoughts cut off mid-word, her eyes locking with those of darkest brown across the room.
What was Raj doing here?
“Who is that smoking-hot hunk of deliciousness?”
Madhuri’s whisper had Nayna jerking. “Raj,” she said through a dry throat, her pulse a panicky beat. Because she knew what happened to men when they saw Madhuri. She knew.
“Oooooh.” Madhuri’s tone was intrigued. “I see what you mean about you two not suiting. He’s what, six three?”
It wasn’t a dig, was just Madhuri being Madhuri. And it wasn’t as if her sister would attempt to poach Raj. Men asked to be with her—she didn’t have to steal. Stomach churning and cheeks hot at the scene surely to come, Nayna walked with her sister to take a seat at one of the tables. The centerpiece was created of tea candles and exotic blooms floating in a fishbowl, each place setting perfectly arranged.
There was no assigned seating, but every one of the six hundred guests was guaranteed a seat. This was a very expensive wedding. And the back of her neck was prickling. Just her imagination. Raj was unlikely to be staring at her when Madhuri was right next to her.
“Good evening, ladies,” a deep male voice said just as Nayna put her purse on the table.
“Hello.” Madhuri glowed up at him, her smile luminous. “I’m Madhuri, Nayna’s sister.”
“Raj.” He slipped into the chair beside Nayna, his expression as solemn as always and his body clad in a black suit that was criminal in how it highlighted his rough-edged sexiness. “This wasn’t taken, was it?”
“My mother was going to sit there.” Nayna scowled at him instead of curling up into a self-defensive ball.
“Oh, Ma can sit by me,” Madhuri said airily.
Raj nodded and stayed put, his large body emanating a heat that made Nayna want to cuddle into him and sniff at his scent from the curve of his neck. He rose to his feet only when her parents arrived after making their way through all their friends and greeting everyone. Shaking her father’s hand and smiling at her mother, he then sat back down. His own parents soon joined them at the table.
Oh. My. God. The man wasn’t just playing dirty, he had declared no-holds-barred war.
She kicked him under the table.
When he gave her a steady, stubborn look, she wanted to strangle him. Despite the black-tie-attired orchestra out front and a gifted singer crooning away Hindi classics as the guests settled in, every eye in the place was on them. Single, unattached men did not sit next to single, unattached women unless something was going on—or that was the accepted point of view. And no one would’ve missed that he’d deliberately chosen the seat next to her, not Madhuri.
Which… okay, yes, that made her want to kiss him. After she finished kicking him.
Bruised ankles or not, he stayed. And brought her chai. Then got her extra sweets. Her parents and his looked on benevolently.
And it started to dawn on her that this serious man, whom she’d never seen laughing, was playing with her. Her bones threatened to melt—but she still had to grit her teeth to control the urge to pour the piping-hot chai into his lap in punishment for his behavior.
“I wouldn’t,” he said roughly under the hubbub of conversation. “You might damage parts you like.”
“I’m going to kill you,” she murmured despite the urge to do highly inappropriate things to his spectacular body.
Music drummed through the huge hall.
The wedding was finally ready to begin two hours after the scheduled time. Which meant it was right on Indian-time. The Hindu priest—the pandit—got up to do a small prayer, then the emcee did an introduction lauding the couple. Their university degrees—in science for the groom, in finance for the bride—were heavily emphasized.
“Is it because I don’t have a degree?” Raj whispered, his breath ruffling her ear. “Is that why you only want me for my body?”
“I swear to God, I’m going to murder you in a minute.”
His responding look held the faintest hint of a smile, and it was pure provocation. She wanted to rip off his clothes and kiss him all over. Did he realize how madly arousing it was to have him crack his mature, serious shell just for her? It made her wonder if he might be like this in bed sometimes, after they got comfortable with one another.
Nayna’s toes curled. Hard.

Short Story Requests

I haven't done one of these for a while, but before you answer, read the "rules" below. Okay, onto the question: What would you like me to do a short story about? I do these for my newsletter subscribers for free - the last one featured Elena and Aodhan and a horror movie.

Rules: It can't be anything that would be integral to the plotline of the books, because those have to go in the books. The things that work best are "missing" scenes or scenes from the characters' lives, or a glimpse at someone who we haven't seen for a while.

I can't make any promises as to what I'll write about. It all depends on who jumps into my brain when I have spare time to sit down and do a short. Also, some things I'm already saving for future books. ;-) But, you never know. I have previously fulfilled reader requests for certain shorts. So, here's your chance to make your request. Oh, and don't forget to mention the requests that you like from other readers.

Catch-Up Time

It's early Monday afternoon here in New Zealand, and I'm gearing up for the week with lots of tea!

What are you up to? What are your plans for the coming week?

For me, today has been all about clearing admin tasks, and also diving into the next Psy-Changeling book. No news for you on the book yet (I just never like to announce things until I'm absolutely sure the characters and I are on the same page. There have been times where they've said ha ha, no, and there go all my well-laid plans.).

Okay, your turn!

REBEL HARD - Out September 18th

REBEL HARD by Nalini Singh (Out September 18th)

Beautiful. Maddening. A rulebreaker in the making.

He’s all wrong for her. She’s all wrong for him. And love is about to make rebels of them both.
