Guest Author: Nikki Logan

Today, we have a debut author visiting - please give Nikki a warm welcome everyone!!

THE BIRTH OF A BOOK

Elephants gestate for 22 months, giraffes 16 months, orang-utans 8 months.

Debut novels…? Somewhere between an elephant and a giraffe, it seems. My debut ‘Lights, Camera…Kiss the Boss’ was conceived during the Australian equivalent of NaNoWriMo. I began June 2008 with a vague idea of a story and finished it a few days shy
of the last day of the month, weighing in at a healthy 55K and full of the promise of new life. The name on its birth certificate was Love on a Rooftop but I knew it by its nickname, LOAR.
I had a world of fun making that ‘baby’ over the space of a month. The story seemed to just flow out of me, like it had been waiting for me to sit at my computer and set it free. And then, when I was done, I filed it away in my documents as an interesting experiment. It never occurred to me that I should polish it up because it never occurred to me that I would sell it. To anyone.
But I did, to Kimberley Young from Harlequin Mills & Boon (London) who was considering one of LOAR’s sibling manuscripts. She casually asked ‘Do you have anything else I can look at’ and I panicked becasue I didn't, then I remembered little LOAR sitting politely in its room waiting to be invited out to play by the big kids. I polished it up and sent it off like a first day at school. It was raw, it was virtually still stream-of-consciousness stuff. And it was on its way to London!

What was I thinking??

Five months from the day I typed The End on my baby, Kim Young gave me the call. Not just a call, the call. She wanted to buy Love on a Rooftop.

That was it, thought I. Fame and fortune here I come. I started planning my retirement from the day job, I bought floor to ceiling IKEA bookshelves to celebrate (and because that seemed like a writerly thing to do). And then the timelines hit me.

The baby that
I’d written in June 2008 and sold in November 2008 wouldn’t be released until December 2009. Thirteen months from the date of sale, eighteen from completion. And then it got pushed back to February 2010 to be part of a special series month and suddenly my baby’s gestation was around twenty agonising months.

I could have made m
ost of an elephant in that time! And me so bad with delayed gratification.

*sigh*

The gestation has been filled with exciting firsts. My first revisions, my first contract, my first advance-cheque, my first author alterations, my first title, my first cover, my first hard-copy-in-the-hands-honest-to-goodness-books and… finally…my first release date.

All writer-things, meaningless to others but the stuff that keeps all of us going. And must be like the first ultrasound for expecting mums. The first heartbeat, the first kick, the first smile, the first step.

Valentines weekend 2010 may be the one I remember for the rest of my life. Even more than the time I got twenty-four anonymous roses on my doorstep. It’s the week my book debuts and the whole world gets to see how I spent June 2008 and a whole lot of months in between. It’s the week I introduce Ava Lange and Daniel Arnot to the planet; all their barely disguised chemistry and complicated history. Their special brand of happy-ever-after.
It’s the day my baby has its first birthday—in elephant years. I hope you can all come to the party!

Lights, Cam
era…Kiss the Boss debuts in February 2010 (March 2010 in Australia & New Zealand) Or be kind to the planet and grab an electronic copy from www.eharlequin.com or your favourite e-book store right now.

Also, I'm over at the RomConversations FF&P blog talking about Friendships in romance. Come on over and join in the discussion.

And, I have to *squee* over two fantastic new reviews for Archangel's Kiss, at Dear Author and at AAR (Desert Isle Keeper review)!

The Forbidden City, Bejing, China

The Forbidden City is an immense place, full of grandeur - literally a city within a city, and when I stood in the middle of it, I could easily imagine what it must've been like when filled with light and color and music.

Below is a closeup of a dragon detailed in metal.

The city is full of interconnecting staircases and bridges - like the ones you can see in the shot below, and in the one at the top of this post.

The large central square.

And finally a gorgeous section of roof detail that may be familiar...

I hope you enjoyed this small glimpse of the Forbidden City! If you're ever able to visit, I would utterly recommend it.

Friday Book Club & Guest-Blogging

I'm guest-blogging over at Literary Escapism about Sympathetic Characters. Come on over and say hi.

Now, onto today's book club. I read India Grey's Powerful Italian, Penniless Housekeeper last night and loved it! Two wonderful, nuanced and likable characters, lots of emotional heart and a great setting.

You can check out an excerpt here.

I remember reading a really good review of this book somewhere, but in spite of my searching I can't find it now. However, thank you for whoever pointed me in Ms. Grey's direction!

Okay, what've you been reading and loving this week?

Review, Interview & Covers

To open, a link to a great review of Archangel's Kiss that came in this morning.
All-in-all Archangel’s Kiss has everything that urban fantasy romance fans could ask for – sexy thrills, compelling characters and an original mythology combined with more than a dash of horror. Paranormal romance doesn’t get better than this.

~ Love Vampires
Also, I have an interview up at Book Bound today.

Plus, Chris Marie Green is giving away a couple of copies from her Vampire Babylon series over at The Knight Agency.

And, I saw this cover for Lauren Dane's Inside Out this morning
and had to post it. Isn't it gorgeous?!

Have you seen any covers you've loved recently?

Writing, Reading & Watching

I'm now working on the third Guild Hunter book and really looking forward to getting into it. I think Bluebell is about to make an appearance.

Also, I'm over at Oddshots today, talking about Bollywood. Swing by and say hi.

And I wanted to give you all a heads-up about a new book releasing today - Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep. I was asked to read this to see if I would blurb it, and I really enjoyed it. It's very definitely urban fantasy, not romance - but if you're in the mood for something dark and gritty, check it out.

Here's an excerpt link, and here's a link to a free short story that comes before the series: Spider's Bargain.

Hope the new week's treating you all well :-)

Friday Book Club

I managed to get my paws on an advanced copy of Shalador's Lady by Anne Bishop (out in March) - if you've heard me talk about the Black Jewels world before, you'll know exactly how loud I screamed when I got it. I stayed up until all hours last night reading it. It's amazing, fantastic!

If you haven't tried this series, go forth now and pick up the first book: Daughter of the Blood. Trust me, you'll adore it.

Okay, your turn. What have you been reading and loving this week?

Sydney

As promised, some photos from my trip to Sydney.

The famous Sydney Opera House at night - picture taken from a water taxi in the harbour.

Above and below - a gorgeous spiral water sculpture in Darling Harbour. I was more than tempted to take off my own shoes and go play!

One of the miniature trains that take people for rides around the Darling Harbour area.

Looking out to the monorail bridge - you can just see the monorail passing across.

Harbourside in the day...

...and at night.

Hope you enjoyed the photos! Sydney really is a wonderful place to visit - especially when the weather is as clear as it was while we were there.

Reading Over the Years

Talking about Nancy Drew and more over at Oddshots! Come, share your memories of your reading journey :)

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

I'm back!

Looking Across to the City from Darling Harbour, Sydney

Sydney was lovely and as you may probably guess, I'll have a ton of pictures to share once I download them all.

The book signing at Galaxy went fabulously. I had such a wonderful time meeting so many readers! Sofia and the rest of the staff were just brilliant (thank you!) and I can't say enough about the store. If you like sf/fantasy & paranormal books and dvds, you'd love it.

Most of the shots from the signing aren't on my camera, so I'll be posting those later once I get my hands on them, but one of the attendees did a great post about it, complete with photos at Yet Another Tentacled Thing so swing by and check it out!

Edited to add: There's another awesome writeup of the signing at Book Thingo.

Also, my in-box is overflowing, so please give me a couple of days to get back to you if you've e-mailed me :-)

Hope you all had a fantastic weekend.

Kindle Reminder & Random Goodness

First, a reminder for those of you who buy books on Kindle. There is another Nalini Singh who releases her books in that format, so please check my website or email me before buying if you're not sure it's one of my releases.
~
The Knight Agency is giving away Monica Burns' Kismet & Gena Showalter is giving away an ARC of Into the Dark (out April).

Jaci Burton is giving away an ARC of Bound, Branded & Brazen (out March). I've already had the chance to read this and it's awesome! Hot enough to singe your eyebrows off and full of the emotional connections I love in Jaci's work. Excerpt link.

(Both Monica's and Jaci's contests are closing soon.)

~
Don't forget I'm signing books at Galaxy Books in Sydney tomorrow. Details here.
~
This is the typo I repeated most often in my most recent manuscript: "back" instead of "bag" <-- I have no idea why, because it's not like the keys are next to each other on the keyboard, and there's an extra letter even! #mysterious

So, how's it going in your corner of the world?

Snapshot Monday: Cardiff Castle, Wales

Some pictures of Cardiff Castle today. It's right in the center of the city, and there's so much to look at both inside and outside.

Picture above: looking down toward the castle gates, from the tower building (pic below).

The walls around the castle are really fascinating - there are a number of these different animal sculptures along the fence-line, like the one below.

Some of the stained glass inside the castle.

And the amazing ceiling in the Arabian room.

A scenic shot to close - of the Welsh countryside.

Hope you enjoyed the photos!

Teaser: Indigo's Book

A Happy New Year present from me to you - a little teaser from the current draft of Indigo's book (final version may be slightly different).

Enjoy!

~~~
Another nip—this one on her shoulder.
She narrowed her eyes. “Watch it or I’ll nip that nose right off.”
He made a growling sound of disagreement, his canines flashing.
Reaching out, she tapped him sharply on the muzzle. “We’re heading back right now.”
Color under her hands, the timber-colored wolf shifting into a human with lake-blue eyes and rain-slick hair. “I don’t think so.” He was on her before she knew it, cupping her face in his hands, his mouth on hers.
The caresss was hot, hard, a slamming fist that held her motionless. And then…an inferno punching through her body, making her tangle her hand in that thick brown hair, tug back his head. “What,” she said on a gasping breath, “are you doing?”
“I thought it’d be obvious.” Laughter in his eyes, the lake seared by sunshine as his thumbs stroked over her cheekbones. “I want to lick you up right now.”
She didn’t take it personally. “You’re high on adrenaline from the hunt.” Pushing off his hands, she angled her head. “And loss of blood.” It ran a clean, water-diluted line down his side. “You definitely need stitches.”
“No, I don’t.” He kissed her again, pushing her down to the earth.
Update & Bookmarks
I'm deep into editing Indigo's book - hoping to get this draft finished by the end of next week.
What's happening at your place?
~ ~ ~
Edited to add: For booksellers, librarians, and book groups - I now have bookmarks for the Guild Hunter series. Please e-mail me at nalinisinghwrites AT gmail DOT com with your mailing address & how many you'd like and I'll get them away to you.
For readers who'd like one, I'm not able to send out singles, given the cost, but I'm happy to send them out in bunches of ten or more, so if there's a group of you (10+) who are happy to use one mailing address and pass them to each other, let me know. I'll also bring some along to the conferences I'll be attending this year, and I've already sent them to a number of bookshops, so your local one might have some :)
Snapshot Monday: Scotland
Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas!
Here are some shots from my travels around beautiful, beautiful Scotland. The shot above is of the piper on the border of England and Scotland.
And below is a picture of part of the famous Rosslyn Chapel (
Da Vinci Code). It was undergoing restoration work while we were there, so we got to watch some of the restorers at work.
Below is a scene from the Highlands. It was an amazingly clear day when we went up - you could literally see blades of grass reflected in the water, it was so calm.
The next picture is from Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye.
Below is Blair Castle - the grounds and the building are beautiful, and its fascinating inside, especially the entrance hall which is set up to display hundreds of weapons!
And, for a historical romance fan, no visit to Scotland would be complete without stopping off at Gretna Green! Here's me posing ;-) The famous Blacksmith's Shop where the weddings took place is the building in the background.
Mr. Darcy
Continuing the P & P theme, I'm over at Oddshots talking about Mr. Darcy. Come vote for your favorite :)
Monday, December 21, 2009
Snapshot Monday: Pemberley!!
I give you the magnificent Chatsworth House, which acted as Pemberley for the most recent movie version of Pride and Prejudice.
Looking down toward the house from the top of the stunning staircase fountain.
There was an exhibition of modern art going on in the (fabulous!!) grounds when we went - this piece was one of my favorites.
This room was used in a scene in P & P.
The library! Isn't it gorgeous?
Costumes from The Duchess, which was also filmed at Chatsworth.
And a shot of the grounds near the house.
If you ever get a chance to visit Chatsworth, I would absolutely recommend it. Make sure you go on a beautiful sunny day as the grounds are utterly beautiful. You could walk for hours and still not see everything.
I hope you all had a lovely weekend :)
I'm going to be writing another Guild Hunter novella for release in 2011 (I think). The lineup of authors is stupendous. One of those authors is the awesome Meljean Brook. I'm not sure if the other two authors have announced it yet, so I'll wait to mention their names, but you'll like it, trust me :-)
Writing
Late post today. I've been reading some fascinating research material on wolves for the past couple of hours.
This afternoon, I'm working on a hard-copy draft (printout) of Indigo's book - I always do at least one draft like this - there's just something about working on the printed page.
What's happening in your corner of the world?
Snapshot Monday: Scenes from Ireland II
After a break last week, I'm back with some more photos from my travels around Ireland. I really love the shot above - the scenery seems so desolate and beautiful at the same time.
A picture of the famous Killarney Jaunting Cars. Totally fun! I recommend a ride if you're ever in the area.
We met this friendly little guy at the Buratty Castle and Folk Park. Isn't he adorable?
Above and below are two shots taken at the absolutely stunning Cliffs of Moher within the space of perhaps half an hour. The fog was amazing. It swept in and covered everything, and then minutes later, you'd look and it was drifting back out.
And to close with, another shot of the beautiful scenery.
Hope you're enjoying the cyber-tour of Ireland :-)
