Next Psy/Changeling Book

I'm currently working on the next Psy/Changeling book, and the hero of that book is....*drum roll please*...Max!

I've wanted to write about the cop since he first appeared in Mine to Possess, and he's definitely living up to expectations ;-) His heroine is someone you haven't met yet, but I think you'll love her. Lots of big developments happening in this book - some things are going to break wide open and there are surprises aplenty.

And that's all I'm saying....for now *grin*

Hmmm...Max. I'll have to go back to MTP and do a little research on this cop.

Thanks for the teaser Nalini!

Max? Hmm, well in preparation for Branded by Fire, I've reread all the previous books (I'm halfway through Hostage now... Branded is sitting here looking at my sadly...waiting). I would never have expected Max to get a book, but neither did I expect Dev. I'm thoroughly intrigued and I just LOVE surprises! I can't wait!! Thanks for the teaser!

Ooh, this calls for a re-read of the series from Book One! Lol. Big developments, eh? Please please please do not break up Hawke & Sienna (yes, they are already a couple in my mind!!)...or maybe one of the big news is that Hawke realize he can and does have another mate whose name begins with an S, has two Ns, and end with an A? :D

I can't wait till Max's book comes out - sometime in 2010, right? But is Hawke's book next? With a certain Cardinal X-Psy? *tries not to beg shamelessly*

*shrieks* MAAAAAAXXXX! I remember asking you if he was going to come back after reading MTP! *happy dance* And we haven't met his heroine? Not at all? Not even by name? (I am so not subtle it is scary).

LOL - Tina/Tabitha you crack me up :) And I thought I wasn't subtle :) Still not sure how I feel about Sienna, although I liked the glimpses we had of her in BBF!

I would like to know about Kaleb... *shamelessly fishing for titbits and proud of it*

Another Sienna - Hawke fan here!!!! Being jealous would "suit" Hawke, or at least make him grasp the fact that he can lose sthg or someone he really wants.

You are such a tease...

There are so many books I want written in this series....

Max did intrigue me, and I think I always expected him to have a book (especially after you announced Dev's book), but I'll confess there are a ton of other characters I am looking forward to. Indigo (I want back in the wolf den ^_^), Andrew, Kaleb, Hawke and Sienna.

Did I mention Hawke and Sienna? ^_^

Although... after reading BBF, I think it would hard to pick who's book to follow Dev's with. I don't think Sienna is ready (although, by the end of Max's book I hope so), and I can't think of anyone in Dark River. I would love to see more of Andrew...

I think I am rambling now. As an author, I think it's a difficult choice who's book should be next. As a reader and devoted fan, I will ready any and everything ^_^

Max did stand out in MTP I guess we will seemore of him in Devs story but I keep going over the books to catch a glimpse of what is going on with Hawke and Sienna.I couldnt sleep well after reading BBF kept wanting to know if they would be together. Thanks for the teaser.I keep thinking that Hawkes story would be the most eagerly waited for book.....

Nalini, that's soooo mean teasing us like that!
Now, I'm all excited and can't wait for his book.
I'm so there with the others, begging shamelessly for some tidbits, hopping the next one to be Hawke's and maybe Sienna's...
I have to say, your books can't come fast enough, I'm completely addicted to the series!

Uh, I liked Max! Any idea when the book will be released? Next may or june or maybe earlier? I always hoped we would read more of him but honestly hadn´t thought about an own book!
We don´t have to forget that Hawke wasn´t really mated. He thinks that the girl would have been his made and I am sure he is right but tragically it is not going to happen anymore so go for it Sienna!
Anyway, I love everyone you write about!

Like Christina, I hope that Indigo will get her own book too. I'm also hoping for the next book to be Hawke's story. I'm definitely a wolf fan!!!!

Greetings!

How annoying...I can't even remember this Max character - so that pretty much says how much this bit of news means to me. I don't think I'm going to bother with the next book or the Max book. I was really hoping for Hawke's story.

I mean when there is so many other characters that readers could be interested in and remember why pull someone out of easily forgotten category?!?!?

It really annoys me how authors like to drag things out to the point you just get impatient. You start thinking its just for sales despite what they say about the story 'arc'. I think the 'teasing' bit just gets old. I mean I can understand if you start hinting at potential stories as you go along but you should follow through within a reasonable time and not leave your readers hanging for what feels like indefinately.

Argh! Nalini is definately going on my do not bother list for the next 12 months.

KMont said...

Holy...well, I'm a bit goggle-eyed but, not about Max. Ahem.

I too cannot remember for the life of me who MAx is. That worries me, not on account of What Will Singh Do, but more my mental faculties. Now I've got a good reason, besides the series being so great, to go back and reread that book. *wink*

Wow, this anonymus guy/girl can not be serious! just because you don´t get hawkes story you are that angry? I mean, Max was a great guy it´s your fault that you can not remember him!
and anticipation is part of the world. what would it be like to wait for a book without teasing or thinking about the potential plot?
I can´t wait for Dev´s or Max book and for the next guild hunter book.
I am really a bit shocked about this negativ reaction.

Hilcia said...

Thanks for the news, Nalini. I don't quite remember details on Max. (Must continue my re-read project).

Just started on BFF and can't wait for Dev's book!

Cool! I wanna know though, especially after just finishing Branded by Fire (loved it), WHEN, oh when, do we get Hawke's story?

I'm getting desperate here. Desperater ... not that that's a real word, but it fits.

When I read MTP, I remember thinking that Max & Dev both appeared to be heroes in need of heroines. I'm happy that Nalini's all set to torture them.

I want Hawk & Sienna's story as well but only when Nalini says they're ready.

Until then, don't forget Indigo, Vlasic, Kaleb, Bowen, Rhia...

Do you know yet if 2010 will also be a 2 release psy-changeling year?

Thanks for the great info! Heading back to re-read the teaser for Blaze of Memory.

I agree with Julia. The reaction from Anonymous is really negative. Besides, if you had read the books well than you would have known who Max is in my opinion. He was a small but integral part in Clay and Talins's story.

For me, I would love to read about Hawke next, I think there are more readers of the Psy/Changeling series who want to read his and Sienna's story. Bur I can also understand that there is a story line and Sienna at least needs the chance to grow a little bit older. And it's nice to read about that.

I'm looking forward to both Dev's and Max's story, although I must say I'm not as impatient for them as I was for Mercy and Riley's story. For me that's logical, because Mercy and Riley were characters I knew for quite some time.

Christina said...

Elizabeth I had the same reaction, I just sensed that Dev and Max were hero's in waiting of their own books, and I'm sure Nalini will do them justice.

As much as I LOVE Hawke and Sienna, I can see why their book needs to wait. Hawke is stubbornly determined to sienna as only having a crush on him (uh, denial?). Sienna I think needs a little more experience in life (enter Kit) before she is ready to have her own book.

Vlasic and Bowen, and any/all of Mercy's brothers, and for some reason after reading BBF, I would like to see Teijan, the rat alpha, have a story.

Unknown said...

I'm so glad Max is getting his own book. I really loved the loyalty and strength he displayed in Clay and Talin's story. He wasn't even intimidated by the changelings and earned their respect. He's a memorable character to me, even if he only showed up in a small part of the story.
I agree with Christina, Mercy's brothers definitely deserve their own stories. Well, I guess I can say that every time a new character pops up because they are all so great! Can't wait for Max's story, thanks Nalini!

I agree that the opinion was a tad overtly negative. In reading the Dark Hunter series, everyone was clamoring for Acheron's book, but his HAD to come as late as it did because SO much had to happen prior to it. His book finished a major story arc. I respect authors who keep the characters on the timeline they need due to their own character development AND the progression of the overall story arc. I don't see it as teasing, or mean spirited in anyway. The story must be told in the right order and I am at least patient enough to wait as much as I would love Hawke's story now...I would rather wait until it's ready to be told/happen.

I can't wait to read Dev's book and Max's book. I will admit to not being a fan of Sienna and Hawke as a couple, but as the books go, maybe that will change as the characters change.

I, too, look forward and eagerly to Indigo, Andrew, Rina, Hawke, Sienna, Kaleb, the Ghost, Walker, Anthony and Kit's books. But as I read, there other names we come across, other Snowdancer soldiers, Psy, and Darkriver cats that...it could really be ANYONE and that's part of the excitement! Who's next, how will the story go, etc. I love this series and I can't ever imagine an end to it. Sorry Nalini, but I hope you keep writing in this world (oh, and the Guilder Hunter world too).

cool! i liked max! but can you give us one more teensy weensy info re his heroine, is psy, changeling or human?

*sigh, was desperately waiting for BbF, got the book and gobbled it all up, and now i'm back to desperately waiting for the next one.

i tell you, this is a vicious cycle!

as Mimi said...it is a vicious cycle. I wait excitedly for the next book but am never satisfied - I think that is a tribute to you though, Nalini. The series never gets old and I really like the way that older characters keep getting mentioned. well done. I've been a fan since the second book and I am not disappointed!

Kewl! I like Max as well.

Re: Hawke's story: I'm sorta looking forward to it, and yet, at the same time, I'm sorta dreading it because something tells me it will probably be the last book of the series and I'm not ready for this series to end yet.

Anonymous said...

LOL...who's next up after Max? I'm sure singh will pull someone else out of a black void.

Barbarita V said...

Wow! Cool down anonymous.
Have you ever heard that anticipation makes for a great reward when you reach your final goal?
I also love Hawke and I would like his story but a writer is not like a robot They write when the inspiration takes place. I rather wait years for a great story and not a quick crappy one that leaves me all disappointed. I stop buying JR Ward books because its lack of quality. I feel that sometimes as a reader we tend to push writers too much to write a story even when they are not ready.
I would still buy the next two books because I know they will be great as all Nalini's book are.

Danggg, I had this long post questioning the possibility of Hawke/Sienna, but I accidentally exited out of it. =/

Anyway. The gist was: YOU CAN'T KNOW FOR SURE if Sienna is Hawke's heroine. Only Nalini Singh knows.

While it was made fairly clear in BBF of Sienna's feelings, the clues were more vague on Hawke's end. The little tidbit on page 181 could be about Sienna, it could be about some other girl in the SnowDancer pack. It wasn't EXPLICITLY stated, therefore nothing is certain.

Just because that's the most likely answer, doesn't necessarily mean it's the true answer. This is fiction; Occam's Razor doesn't always apply. In fact, some authors go OUT of their way to avoid the predictable answers. Sometimes that's a good thing, sometimes not.

I don't care if it ends up to be Sienna or someone else ENTIRELY -- I just want to be able to believe the pairing. (Though I bet a LOT of people will be pissed if it isn't Sienna, LOL )

And actually, I thought the possibility of a Kit/Sienna pairing might be interesting. That certainly seemed to be an idea hinted at later on in Branded By Fire. =D

I agree with anonymous about nalini dragging out the series, when anyone who read her first books was waiting patiently for Hawke's book. . If you read the branded by fire spoiler thread, most if not all mention the part they love best involved Hawke and Sienna.Thats what most of the readers want, not Max's story, (a blip in the main story) when you have other characters, like indigo, andrew etc... Sales seems to be the rational,. (but who am I to knock that, business is business). However, I have to agree with anonymous, I won't be looking forward to Dev's or Max's book

Susan said...

While I might not be particularly enamored of Max, I DID think Dev was intriguing enough for his own novel. Very very intriguing.

Well, at least with Max, you'll get to see more of the human side of the over arching plotline. Tally didn't really count, since she's technically a Forgotten. We silly humans shouldn't underestimate the importance of our fiction-world counterparts. =P

Nalini Singh said...

Anon, Lisa, I'm sorry you feel that the series is being dragged out. I have a very defined story arc, and while it may appear that Hawke's book is being delayed, it was always going to be written at a very particular point in the series.

One of the reasons why is the time factor - his book needs to take place at a certain point in time. And to reach that point early, I'd have to skip months and months of time, meaning we'd skip all the developments in the other characters lives during that chunk of time (for example, things like Lucas and Sascha's news in "Branded By Fire").

More critically, I'd be skipping several important events that need to take place before his book and that would be a disservice to his story. I think of this series like a jigsaw puzzle or a chess game - each piece must be in the correct position for everything to work (for each book, and overall).

As to the characters I choose to write about - writing a book is an incredibly intimate process - I would never choose to write a story that didn't resonate deeply within me, because I live with those characters 24/7 while writing their book. Right now, Max is in my head all the time, and I adore that cop.

And Dev - I cried over the keyboard while writing his story, and it's garnered wonderful, emotional reviews from those who've read it. As readers, you may or may not agree with those reviews when you pick up the book, and that is your absolute right. However, when I put pen to paper (or fingers to the keyboard), I strive to write the best book I can each time.

I have been a fan of yours since u wrote desert warrior, I absolutly love ur writing. reading your books is like a double edged sword I cant wait to get your books but I dont like when I finished them and have to wait months fop the next book the only thing that keeps me sane is that I know the next book is going to be worth the wait. I am also waiting for Hawke's book but I understand that everything has to go in order and I will read every changling/psy story that you put out.I just just finished Dev abd Katya's book and I love it from start to finish, i ccant wait for ax's book.

Your are a great author and i thank you for the work that you do. Keep writing

Alrighty. First off I gotta say, I read your book in the wrong order, so when I read Mine To Possess...I didn't like it. BUT, after a high recommendation from my librarian, I started from the first book. And dear God, I was IN LOVE. I reread that book 3 times. (and i never ever reread books unless NESSESCARY) And now, I'm so hooked! I love Lucas, Sascha, Faith, Vaughn...etc. LOVEABLE CHARACTERS. But I am total HAWKE/SIENNA SHIPPER! Though I do love your books, I'm not too excitied about the new book being on Max, but that's only because I'm so in love with all your other characters. There wasn't much light on Max or Dev. But in either case, I'm still gonna read it. I mean....HELLO! You wrote it. =]

BUT IM SO IMPATIENT! Hawke's book NEXT YEAR? You stake me in the heart with a butcher's knife. =[

(*sigh*) Just a teeny weeny hopeful wish...you have some Hawke and Sienna action in the book? ANYTHING to keep my poor heart going! I beg of you! *gets on her knees*

Please keep writing! Love!Love!

God, I just used to love the psy/changellings series. To bad the three last books were not as good as the others. Actually, I have stopped reading the series after Dev's story. I guess I was just too unhappy about Hawke and Sienna's developpement. I think, I am going to wait and see the reviews of the next book (Indigo). I will hate to see Kit and Sienna together. I was rooting for Hawke and Sienna since the first book and seeing more of Kit/Sienna will prevent me from reading all the next books (yeah I know, this is not fair for the other characters but I cannot seem to finish the new books). Particularly, when I cannot even see my favorite character (Judd) anymore.
Thank you Nalini for all the previous books and hope both Indigo and Hawke's stories will be just as good.
