Guest Author: Michelle Raven

Thank you everyone for the wonderful chat with Michelle! I've run the random numbers and the winner of the giveaway book is:

KLAUS (Herr Palomar)

Congratulations! Please email your address to: nalinisinghwrites AT gmail DOT com

Today we have a very special guest - German writer,
Michelle Raven! Michelle and I are both published by LYX in Germany, and we "met" via e-mail. Her very first paranormal romantic suspense releases next week - and she's agreed to drop by and answer questions, so feel free to hit her with them! The book is being released in German. However, Michelle speaks both German and English, so questions in both languages are welcome.

Giveaway: Michelle is giving away a copy of her book to a German speaking reader in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. Leave a comment by 7am, Monday 13th July 2009 (New Zealand time) to be in the random draw. (And please remember to check on Monday to see if you've won.)

Verlosung

Everyone, please welcome Michelle to the blog!

Bitte heißt Michelle auf dem Blog willkommen!
___________

M: Thank you Nalini for having me! I’m honored and thrilled that you invited me to your blog. I’m reading ‘Branded by Fire’ at the moment and I love it! Not a big surprise, since I loved all the other books of the Psy/Changeling series, too.

M

1. Who is Michelle Raven? Tell us a bit about yourself.

Michelle Raven is my alter ego who writes romantic suspense and now also paranormal romantic suspense novels. In real life I’m working as a one person librarian in a museum in Lower Saxony, Germany. I started writing in 1999, when I was reading a travel guide about USA’s National Parks and suddenly had an idea for a story when I saw a picture of the Fiery Furncace in Arches NP. I wrote three years on that one and it was published immediately afterwards in October 2002. Since then I’m hooked on writing (and publishing!) and hope I can keep doing that for a very long time.

2. What is the title of your July release in German? Translated into English?

The serial title is ‚Ghostwalker’ (which is a Native American term for Mountain Lions/Cougars) and the title of the first volume is ‘Die Spur der Katze’ (= ‘Track of the cat’). Publication date is July 15th, which is actually next week.

Juli 2009, also bereits nächste Woche.

3. What is 'Die Spur der Katze' about?

‘Die Spur der Katze’ is about former New York journalist Marisa Pérèz, who one night finds an injured and very naked man on the doorstep of her sequestered cottage. An ugly scandal made her leave New York City and come to Mariposa, a small town in California near Yosemite National Park. Marisa tends to the wounds and let’s the stranger stay, even though he acts and looks somewhat – abnormal. But he is also quite handsome, if you like the tall, lean and rugged look.

The next day two detectives come to her cottage, investigating the murder of a neighbour. Marisa doesn’t know if the stranger was involved in the crime, but she lies to the detectives to protect him. Now the murderers are not only chasing Coyle, as the man is called, but also Marisa because she helped him.

When her cottage is attacked the following night, Coyle leads her into the forest, away from civilization. Marisa is suddenly thrown into a whole new world, where Coyle changes into something that can’t really exist.

4. Is this your first book?

No, it’s my seventh published novel (five with the name Michelle Raven and one with Michaela Rabe). But it’s my first paranormal novel, so it’s all new and exciting.

5. What did you find most challenging / most interesting, about writing this book?

Writing the paranormal elements was really challenging for me, because I had never done that before. I tried to stick to reality as much as possible, because I wanted the heroine to realize that the world she knows is not everything out there. The possibility that other 'beings' exist and that they have many problems normal humans don’t even have to think about. But I really liked the way Marisa handled what I dumped in her lap and I loved her interaction with Coyle in all his shapes.

6. Where can readers find out more information about your book, perhaps read an excerpt?

You can find more information about ‘Die Spur der Katze’ on my website www.ghostwalker.michelleraven.de or at the publisher’s website www.egmont-lyx.de . There is also an excerpt up for a quick peek on the first chapter.

7. Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I’d like to thank you, Nalini, for introducing me to the world of shape-shifting Cats, I just love them! That was the main reason for me to start writing paranormals.

Thank you to Michelle for the great interview!

Please do not enter me in the contest but I did want to comment.

I am intrigued by your new novel Ms. Raven, especially since it takes place in a town not far from where I live. I find it fascinating, have you ever been to California? How do writers write about areas they don't live in, do you research, visit?

I look forward to the English translation of your book (if one will be published).

Thank you, again, Nalini for bring us another guest author!

Hi Michelle - the cover of your book is beautiful!! Is there plans to release an English version or will that depend on publisher stuff?

Unfortunately for me, I do not speak German, but this definitely is a book I'd buy in English. Good luck with the new release!!

Hallo Michelle aka Michaela!

Dear Nalini!

"Branded by Fire" is amazing, but you know this, of course.
My friends are also enjoying it they find it hot, sexy, passionate, etc.

Best wishes - as always ;-)

I just asked if the world of Michelle Raven will be as a complex as Nalinis Psy/Changeling world and if the heroes of the books will belong to the (probably) future books as well. Further I said it is exciting to read a german fantasy novel because we don´t have as much a for example america.

Sounds like a cool book. Unfortunately, I am decidedly monolingual. If it comes out in English, would you translate it yourself? That seems like a good way to insure accuracy!

Michelle, (Don't enter me in the contest...) I can't wait to get a hold of the English translation of your book.Especially since I've been to Mariposa.I used to live in Merced,(just outside of Mariposa). You're book sounds really intrigueing.

I'd also be interested in finding out if the book will release in English. Unfortunately, I don't speak German either. Just a little Spanish!

It sounds intriguing, though. Good luck with it.

Hi,

Your book looks GREAT!!! I am actually a Brit who lives in Germany and have learned the language and sometimes even picks up a German book to read.

(The excerpt sounds like perfect time on my way to and from work- train of course not car :) I would be happy to win this book as monday 13th happens to be my birthday!
Ich lese fast nur Englisch, definetly hooked on Nalini´s books! All of them- deutsche Übersetzungen "lahmen" meist und das ist freundlich ausgedrückt :(

Thank you Nalini for your perfect books (love BBF, starting my second reading today, in case I missed some "details") and for introducing these interesting guests

I'm glad there are a few comments already - thank you. I'm trying to answer both in English and German.

@Una: I've been to California a few times over the last 10 years (I just love the Western States, especially the Southwest). I drove through Mariposa on the way to Yosemite some years back, but today there are so many books and of course the internet to do research.
The setting however is more a cabin on the outskirts of Mariposa and from there they flee through the forest, so you won't see that much of Mariposa or other towns. A part of the book is also set in Nevada.

I'm not sure there will be an english translation, unfortunately it is more or less impossible for a german author to be translated and published in an American (or other english-speaking) publishing house. But I would really like that!

@Cybercliper: Thank you, I like the cover, too. Lyx always does great covers. :-)

The foreign rights division of Lyx is of course trying to sell licences to other countries, but as I said to Una, it is really difficult to place an english translation.

Thank you for your wishes!

English translation:

Cora said that she read and really liked two of my books ('Riskante Nähe' and 'Perfektion') and that she is looking forward to reading 'Die Spur der Katze'.

My answer: I'm glad you liked them. Have fun with 'Die Spur der Katze' and I hope you'll like it just as much.

What for a great idea to present us an German autor, Nalini!

@Julia:

English translation: (Julia translated the questions herself) I just asked if the world of Michelle Raven will be as a complex as Nalinis Psy/Changeling world and if the heroes of the books will belong to the (probably) future books as well. Further I said it is exciting to read a german fantasy novel because we don´t have as much a for example america.

My answer: The story is located in the real world, nobody knows something like shapeshifters exist. Well, nobody except the shapeshifters and those who hunt them.
I don't want to spoil, but of course there is a group of other shapeshifters and there are lots of other storys I can tell. The heroes and other characters from the first book will also be in the sequels (some more, some less).
I hope you'll like 'Die Spur der Katze'.

@MaryK: I don't think I could translate the book myself, because although I can read english perfectly, if I tried to translate my text it would always sound ... well, german. The syntax anyway.

But if a publishing house would translate it, I would read it to see if it still 'sounds' like me.

Vom Syntax her zumindest.

@Erin: Thanks, I'd really like for english readers to be able to read my book, too.

@Jennifer K.: Thanks to you, too. If the book will ever get translated, I'll be sure to announce it!

Translation: Auch dir vielen Dank.

Translation: It's great that you can read german books, too! And I'm glad that you want to read my book. Paranormal Romance is really popular in Germany at the moment, especially vampires.

Translation: I'm also mostly reading on bus or tram - in my 'leisure time' I'm writing. I'm also reading mostly english books, because some translations are not so good and many great books are never or much later translated. Additionally it practices my english.
Happy Birthday!

Hallo Eva,

Translation: Evas Question (her own translation) Hello Michaela, nice to meet you on Nalini`s web page;-).
If I see the website "Impressions" / pictures of your new book series , then I `ve to ask myself: " Where did you hide yourself only so long time? " *g*. - Your new Ghostwalker series seems to be a very interesting new book series. … And who knows, if you should plan an author reading anytime; perhaps we learn to know each other ...

My Answer: My books are published since 2002, so I'm not really new, I just wrote Romantic Suspense and not Paranormal Romance. ;-) You can find my other books at www.michelleraven.de and www.michaela-rabe.de
I'm glad you find my new series interesting.
Lyx made a 'reading folder', maybe a few bookstores would like to engage me for a reading. I will post that on my website, of course.

Michelle, is Michaela Rabe your real name? I'm curious, because I rarely ever meet another Michaela who isn't at least 15 years younger than me, and even less frequently meet one who spells her name the same way. I often go by the nickname Mitch because some people have trouble remembering the name Michaela, and most people have trouble pronouncing it if they see it written. A lot of the Michaelas younger than me are spelled McKayla or Mikayla.

Your book sounds very interesting, I wish you luck in continuing your series. I also wish (and not for the first time) that I had taken German in high school instead of Latin!

You've said in the comments that it's very difficult to sell German books to an American market. Is there anything we here in the States can do to help change that? Perhaps e-mail a few choice publishing houses and request your book in English? Would they pay attention to that?

Michelle said...

Hi Janine,

thank you for dropping by. Mercy and Riley are great together, aren't they? So many sparks flying. :-)

Coyle is a real bitable hero, if I do say so myself. :-D But don't worry, Marisa knows how to handle him ...

Just three more days until the release of 'Die Spur der Katze'!

Übersetzung: Hallo Janine,

danke für's Vorbeischauen. Mercy und Riley sind toll zusammen, oder? Es knistert richtig zwischen ihnen. :-)

Translation: Hi Anke, nice of you to drop by. Who knows, maybe you'll win the copy of 'Die Spur der Katze', the chances are good for everyone at the moment. :-)

@Annie: Thank you!

Michelle

Michelle said...

@Mitch: Yes, Michaela Rabe is my real name. In Germany Michaela was a quite popular name in the early seventies. There's also a song it goes something like 'Michaela, you are my sunshine' (well, its old, too ;-)). You don't see too many Michaelas here that are much older or younger.
I had the pronounciation problem in the US, too. The people mostly called me Mikayla, because they can't really pronounce the soft 'ch'. Rabe was a whole other problem. ;-)
Thank you for your good wishes. I hope I can continue the series until all the stories of the characters are told. In Germany English is the first foreign language you have to learn, the second would be either French or Latin. I had French and Spanish a few years. Latin I had to take a course when I studied library sciences. But I've forgotten most of it by now.
I don't know if the American publishing houses would pay attention, if readers would ask them to translate a German book. Probably not, since nobody knows me there and so far I'm not a mega bestselling author in Germany. But who knows, everything is possible. :-) Maybe an editor will take a look at Nalinis Blog and think: we have to publish that author! (Well, everybody is entitled to dream ...)
I've written several romantic suspense novels before and most of the German publishers say: 'Great American writing style - but can't you write about Germany, not the US?' No, I can't, sorry. Somehow only the American West inspires me to write. *sigh*

Translation: Valerie asked if I couldn't just write a novel in English.

My answer: I can read and communicate in English but for an English native speaker it would sound 'false', because my syntax will sound German.
I think, you have to a) live several years in GB/USA etc. b) have an extraordinary talent for languages or c) have somebody who revises your text. Unfortunately that is not the case with me.
I could have the text translated to English, but it would be really expensive and there is no guaranty that it would find a publisher.
It also would take time that I don't have at the moment, with a full time job and writing two books a year.

The extract of the novel Ghostwalker is very exciting, the style is this time in something other kind and nevertheless unmistakably in the Michelle Raven style.
The attractive location of the novel is california, added with some bad memories from Marisa of New York.
Altogether a much promising reading sample.
