Friday Book Club

Time to talk books!

I have very recently discovered the Liaden books by Sharon Lee & Steve Miller. All I can say is - where have you been all my life?!  This week, I devoured  The Dragon Variation, which is an omnibus that includes three novels - Local Custom, Scout's Progress, and Conflict of Honors. The omnibus acted as a great introduction into the series for me.

The bookseller who recommended the Liaden books to me* described them as regencies in space, and I think that's a wonderful way to put it. The Liaden culture's formal rules of behavior are very regency-like. Plus, these three books all had strong romances. Of course, there are also spaceships, a battle or two, and adventure!

I know I'm very late to the party, but the good news is, I have lots of books to inhale! If you haven't tried this series, check it out.

Okay, your turn! What are you reading and loving at the moment?

I'm reading Storm's Heart by Thea Harrison :D I blew through the first one (Dragon Bound) and had to get the rest of the series :)

The Liaden books sound really good -- I may have to give those a go!

I'm reading Twisted by Gena Showalter right now. I love her books but I'm having a really hard time getting through this one :( I should be getting That Old Black Magic by Michelle Rowen soon and I'm anxious to read that one.

I'm delighted you've discovered the Liaden Universe. You have a lot of books and pleasure in front of you! I'm currently rereading the Celta series by Robin D. Owens and am in the middle of Heart Quest. I'll probably interrupt my reading of the series tonight to gobble up Thea Harrison's True Colors.

Lee and Miller are some of my favorite authors. I have almost everything they wrote in either hardcopy or ebook version, and quite a few things in both versions.

I read True Colors earlier in the week, and enjoyed it very much. It triggered a reread the Elder Races series, and I am now rereading Serpent's Kiss.

I love the Liaden Universe series! Miri is my favorite character. Humor, an intergalactic mafia, alien turtles, epic romances, spaceships, and culture clashes.

I just discovered Jean Johnson's Sons of Destiny series. Book 1 is The Sword by Jean Johnson. Now I have 8 more books to read in the series. The Wolf, The Cat, The Mage, etc. 8 brothers were part of a prophecy that is supposed to destroy their country. So the 8 brothers were exiled to an island and they are looking for love...Awesome.

I'm so pleased that you share my pleasure in the Liaden universe. Your commenters have suggested other books and series which I will happily explore. The book which I have just finished is itself the most recent Liaden book by Lee and Miller: Ghost Ship. Two pieces of advice for new readers: first, do not neglect the short fiction now easily available in e-book formats. Second, this is a family saga which spans many years. In other words, sometimes characters we love die. Still, if the book is on the shelf, readers can resurrect favorites at will, true?

You have a lot of wonderful books in front of you, but as another commenter has mentioned, don't neglect the short fiction in the Liaden series. I've just started P.D. James' Death Comes to Pemberley, and I expect to enjoy it very much.

Someone recommened to me The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. All I can say is "GO READ THIS BOOK!" It is so compelling and riveting that I read it in three nights! It is a young adult book, but has you thinking..."WOW". I can't wait to begin book 2 and 3!

So love the Liaden books. I tend to re-read the entire series at least every other year. Right now I'm also in love with the Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster Bujold.

I have been a Liaden fan for a long time. Recently I discovered an author who claims to have been inspired to a career in writing by this very series. Nathan Lowell has held my attention with the Solar Clipper Trader Tales Series. Quarter Share, Half Share and Full Share are all available in paper and electronic form. Double Share is forthcoming, and two more are in the pipeline after that.

They all feature the same main character and are well done. I recommend them. (By the way, the author has provided audio recordings of ALL the books, even the ones not available in book form, on Itunes for FREE).

If the Liaden universe is your cup of tea, you will almost certainly love Lois McMaster Bujold's A Civil Campaign. Of course, you'll have to read the rest of the Vorkosigan series in order, first. If you haven't already... Can't recommend highly enough.

And I forgot: in a very different tone, Mira Grant's FEED is fantastic. I think she made me claustrophobic with a very realized post-zombie-rising world of perpetual blood tests and social norms some 25 years after the apocalypse of the dead. She also writes (more traditional fantasy) as Seanan McGuire, also very enjoyable.

One of life's great pleasures is sharing my favourite books with people who love reading. It's the reason I have a bookshop. And to get my own reading of course.

I am re-reading Beat of Temptation because none of the books in my TBR pile seem tempting enough! These books you guys are all talking about sound good, though the two authors thing always puts me off. Dont know why but I have never liked it;its like I can see which person has written which part and the story then feels disjointed. Does anyone else feel that way or is it just me?

Saiqa said...

Oh and the person who mentioned the hunger games. I have read them all and I totally agree with you. They are very thought provoking and I couldnt recommend them enough. I cant wait for the film next year!

I just finished the first Stephanie Plum book. I stumpled on the trailer for the movie a few days ago and thought I should give the books a try. The first one was very entertaining.

Since I have to wait for books 2 and 3 of the series to be delivered, I'm going to read Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep next.

congratulations - you have much wonderful reading awaiting you. Val Con and Miri. two of my favorite characters.

In the spirit of the season, I just read Penny Watson's first book about the Klaus brothers, Sweet Inspiration, and am starting the second, Sweet Magik.

And re-reading True Colors by Thea Harrison and Alien Proliferation by Gini Koch. Highly recommend Gini's Kitty books if you like romance, sf, and humor. Touched by an Alien is the first.

I LOVE Miller and Lee's books! They're on my shelf of comfort books. My favorite is Agent of Change. Gotta love Val Con. It's good to know that so many people enjoy them as much as I do! I haven't read their short fiction - I'll have to give it a look. I'm re-reading old favorites - just finished Kate Daniels and have started on Mercy Thompson.
