True Romance & Friday Book Club

The RWNZ conference kicks off today - I'm so looking forward to catching up with all my writing friends from across New Zealand and over from Australia!

I'm hoping to log on over the weekend, but just in case I can't, don't forget to check out the Borders True Romance blog. My post will be featured on the 21st (U.S. time), and there are giveaways - including an advance copy of Blaze of Memory!

Onto the book club - all about your recommended reads this week. What've you been reading and enjoying? If you haven't had a chance to read this week, what're you looking forward to diving into?

I just picked up a book at a second hand bookstore called Dipped in Chocolate an anthology with three related stories, really cute love stories by Renee Luke; I've never heard of her but when I saw the title I couldn't resist it.

I read two fabulous books this week, Thirteen Orphans by Jane Lindskold and Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell which has a truly wonderful quote I'll be using in the future at the end "Read to children. Vote. And never buy ANYTHING from a man whose selling fear."
Now I just need my library to hand over the sequel to Orphans-in the mean time there's back list...

I just finished The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker, and it was beautiful and haunting. It's historical/paranormal. :)

Nalini - I hope you have a wonderful time at the RWNZ conference :)

Great quote Gail!

I finished reading Were Serpents Sleep (CS Harris) - absolutely brilliant - and am now reading Ratcatcher (James McGee). It is set in the same era (early 1800s) and place (London) as the Sebastian St Cyr books, but the main protagonist is a Bow Street Runner. It's very good...but very dark! Then I have some yaoi manga to read and after that it's either Graceling or New Moon. Decision, decisions :)

So far I've read the latest Weather Warden book by Rachel Caine. It was okay, but also kind of a disappointment.

Not a disappointment? Two very different, but VERY good books.

One was called Countess Below Stairs by Eva Ibottson (spelling), a simple, but very sweet retelling of the Cinderella story.

The other was Dreamfever by KMM. All I have to say on that one is WHOA! What an awesome trip that was! :)

Just read Hunt Her Down, Roxanne St. Claire's latest 'Bullet Catcher' novel.

Wow, contemporary action/romance w/ sexy bodyguard - it was great! Am now waiting for next 'Bullet Catcher', Make Her Pay, to come out on 29-Sep.

Also read Shayla Black novella, Fated. (Free download - http://doomsdaybrethren.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/Black-S_Fated.pdf)

Loved the Doomsday Brethren! Decided to pick up first book, Tempt Me With Darkness, and start series at the beginning. Must do this right away because Doomsday Brethren book 2, Seduce Me In Shadow, is coming out 29-Sep.

Will make waiting for Blaze of Memory easier to bear.
*grin*

I've been reading a lot this week despite being busy at work. I managed to finish three books, Kay Hoopers' Blood Sins (not recommended for reading just before you go to sleep, otherwise a fabulous book), Jayne Ann Krentz' Running Hot (it was fantastic, I couldn't put it away so it was a good thing I had an appointment at the hairdressers because I always have lots of time to read there) and last a book from a writer I didn't know but will be reading more in the future and that was Trouble in Mudbug by Jana DeLeon. It's a hilarious story about a woman who is sort of haunted by the ghost of her mother-in-law.

Just finished Hot Pursuit by Suzanne Brockmann and was fabulous! She does great work!
This weekend, not sure exactly what I'll be reading, but Christing Skye or maybe a reread of Kresley Cole's IAD series sounds good, hehe.

Beneath a Marble Sky by John Shors. Strong female character, historical setting, India and the Taj Mahal, political intrigues and romance. I cried all the way through the last chapter and hugged the book when I was done.

Read "A Duke of Her Own" by Eloisa James -- the last book in her Desperate Duchesses series. This is a series that petered out for me, but I truly wanted to know what happened to Villiers (one of my favorite characters). It was an okay read.

Continuing with the Cal Leandros UF series -- finished "Moonshine" the 2nd book. This series is getting better. :)

Orannia, I highly recommend Graceling. It's beautifully written and a very different kind of love story from Full Moon. The only problem with Graceling is that I wanted more, it was that good!

I've been making my way through Ilona Andrews's Kate Daniels books. Wow. I'm almost finished with Magic Strikes. Thank goodness for her fabulous web site because I don't think I could make it until her next release without her bits-n-pieces and blog to tide me over. LOL

I'm thinking about changing it up a little bit and reading Leslie Parrish's Black Cats romantic suspense trilogy next. I've never read anything written by her before and she's gotten good reviews. It's sounding like I also need to check out KMM's Fever series. I've never read any of her books either.

I finished reading Deanna Raybourn's Silent in the Sanctuary, which, like the first Julia Grey book, was a wonderful read. Sadly I don't have the next book in the series in my to-be-read pile.
I also read Susan Carroll's Midnight bride, which I liked very much.
The next books I'm going to read are:
A duke of her own - Eloisa James
Sea Lord - Virginia Kantra
Tanner's Scheme - Lora Leigh
Lord of the fading lands - C.L.Wilson (a new author for me!)

I read Karen Marie Moning's fourth book in the Fever Series, Dreamfever about Fae coming into the human world. I love the series, though the cliffhangers are killer! I don't know how I'll wait until next year for the next and (I think) final installment.

Bridget & Jenyc-- I haven't read KMM's fever series! I have all of her highland series (and all I can say is I absolutely LOVE Adam Black. One of my fave heroes of all time!).

I finished The Iron Hunt by Marjorie M Liu this week. I just couldn't get into it. I like her Dirk and Steele series much better so far. I just couldn't get into Grant (I found myself rooting for the demons for a romantic lead).

Otherwise I've been researching for my teaching class. I think I will probably just stick to rereading some of my keepers: Angel's blood, Kresley's IAD, and Fellowship of the Ring.

The entire Jordan Castillo Price backlist for Channeling Morpheus and Sweet Oblivion - very good. They are short, but good.

The Art of Dying with Josh Lanyon and Jordan Castillo Price - also very good.

I just finished reading the first 4 of Karen Chance's Cassie Palmer series (Touch the Dark, Claimed by Shadow, Embrace the Night, and Curse the Dawn, in order of publishing date) and enjoyed them immensely. They have the same kind of plot depth that Nalini Singh's novels do. They also hit the ground running and each is an action roller coaster. All 4 books basically take place over a month or two. My sister recommended them to me after I told her she'd like Nalini Singh's Psy/Changling novel. She has read the first 2 and loves the character development and the plot depth, too.

I also reread Nalini Singh's Branded by Fire (Mercy's and Riley's story) - I think that might be the 3rd time I've read since it came out in late July. I've enjoyed the Psy/Changling books, but this one most especially.
