The Disappeared – Kristine Kathryn Rusch

This is the coolest book. If you like science fiction and thrillers, you’ll enjoy this. It’s set in a time of interstellar travel, when humans are part of a wider universe that includes aliens completely unlike us.

The hero of this book, Miles, is a detective on the Moon base. He’s barely settled into his job when bizarre things start to happen. An alien ship is stopped with two kidnapped children on board, three people are found murdered in a floating space yacht, and all of this seems connected to a woman on the run last seen heading for Mars.

The world is really complex and disturbing in a way that makes you think—for example, some aliens are allowed to kill in vengeance, while others are permitted to take children to pay for the crimes of their parents. So Miles not only has to figure out if a crime has been committed at all, he has to wrestle with whether what he’s doing is truly just.

I’m hooked, I tell you. I've already read Extremes, the second book in the series and I’m going to be racing through the rest (the series is up to book 6 now and it looks like each is a stand-alone mystery but with an overarching backstory). Here's a link to the author's website.

I looooove finding a new series to catch up on. Have any of you guys glommed* an author recently?

*glom = tracking down and reading voraciously through an author/series in a huge burst.
