The super parasite hits Raphael and Elena! 🤣🤣🤣 Well, Nisia did say Elena was compatible to Raphael.
Glad to read about Zoe, Eve, and their relationship with Elena over time.
Who knew that Caliene would stop a potential war between Illium and is dad? I'm on Team Illium on that whole mess.
Zoe marries one of Nassir's sons! Didn't see that coming. I think Sara and Deacon would approve.
Loved that Elena still wore the bracelet Beth had given her before she’d died.
The pregnancy stuff was a hoot and loved that we got various glimpses of Nix as he grew up.
Enjoyed the Elena and Greta friendship and Sara niggling her in her mind to truly embrace a new bff.
So glad that the stuff with Caliane turned out okay. Despite her actions to Raphael before we met her on page, she’s always been one of my favorite characters. Loved the way she got Aegaeon to back down. And that she refused to tell Raphael or the others what she’d said.
The subplot with Harrison didn’t turn out the way I first thought it would, though if it had that would have been okay too. At least he honored his promise to Beth.
Michaela’s sort of redemption arc also worked.
Liked the twist that Ambrosia had also changed Raphael.
Galen teaching Nix and Aanisa to fly!
The Legion!
Eve and Izzy!
My only quibble is I wish we’d gotten to see Jessamy fly. But I understand why it didn’t fit in the story. Also wanted more Mahiya & Jason but I always do, so that’s just a personal thing.
Overall I thought the book was a lovely farewell to these characters. Happy Nalini got to close out the series on her terms.
I loved that it was Caliane who nipped Aegeon's war in the bud. I would have liked more about Titus and the Hummingbird. Their story was my absolute favorite. Overall this was a satisfactory conclusion to the series.
I do have one outstanding question though. At the end of the series, Elena is a 1100 year old angel but not once is it mentioned her purging the toxin and making vampires. Does her body not make the toxin because she's a made angel? I would think she'd as a guild hunter that she'd have some thoughts about needing to make vampires.
I feel so grateful that over half of the book was just the pregnancy. And yet so greedy because I wanted as many pages for Nixie's childhood years.
Truly, the frequent and big time jumps after Nixie's birth killed me but his childhood was definitely cut too short. Simply too much was skipped over, especially by jumping from toddler straight to youth :/ I could read an eternity of scenes about Elena and specifically Raphael with their son as a baby and toddler.
(More importantly, I don't like it when stories fast forward too much and too quickly as soon as the main characters have a child. They are the protagonists, the ones I care about so very deeply, therefore I don't need to see the child grown up (yet). Rather, I need to see the parents being parents. But of course some reviewers already expressed a desire to see Nix in his own story ...)
In general though, we unfortunately didn't get to see his baby and toddler self with very many people, not even among their close friends and family. Really only (and briefly) with Majda, Illium, Naasir, Jessamy, Galen, Caliane and Eve.
Whereas I had even been hoping for characters who knew Raphael as a babe to meet his son, like Celesta.
On that note, it made my heart happy to see Raphael and Elena joined on their journey of parenthood by Elijah and Hannah. It had been my secret hope for the latter two to have a baby as well, so I was beyond giddy about their little Aaanisa and her timing :D
I also keenly missed seeing any reactions of immortals outside of Raphael and Elena's inner circle (and of the general populace) reacting to them having a baby, particularly after the rumors were mentioned as a result of them going to such great lengths to keep her pregnancy secret. And considering that Elena is so young, in angelic terms. Just think of what was said about Aodhan's sister who was hundreds of years older than Elena when she got pregnant ...
Plus, while I greatly appreciated Michaela's return and redemption, I guess we'll never know now what has become of Astaad and Favashi. And here I had already been picturing one of them returning and Aegeon going back to sleep ...
Finally, there was, curiously, no word about how Jeffrey died. Sara and Beth, yes, but not Jeffrey. When I would've thought it would come up in Elena's memories after she became a parent herself ...
I loved the tidbits about Ransom's and Demarco's lives though. And was so delighted about Eve and Izak and Zoe and Izar finding each other.
@libraryaddict: That ambrosia and mortality twist laying Raphael's worries about a potential madness to rest was indeed nice, however, I'm not sure about them linking Lijuan's words of warning to it. After all, she had no way of knowing he would produce ambrosia to Make Elena into an angel.
@Anonym: Good point with the toxin! I hadn't thought about it but now I'm wondering too.
All that's left to say now is that I'll be fervently hoping for at least some short stories featuring more scenes of precious little Nixie with his parents and their friends/family!!!
