Besides two healthy baby boys I think the gift that has stuck with me the longest was my first stuffed animal (I call them stuffies). My brother gave it to me for Christmas when I was about 7. It was a lion cub I named Ginger. I am now 50 years old and I still have it! The other gift(s) I most remember from childhood were dolls from other countries my Grandma would bring back from her travels. They opened my eyes to the wider world because I wanted to find out more about where my dolls came from. More recently my 17 year old son actually gave me a heartfelt Mother's day card last year. Usually he gives goofy / funny cards. They pick them out themselves so I know he chose it. Boy did I get teary-eyed!
To me it's the matching set of small plates and bowls my grandmother gave me when I moved out of the house I'd lived with her and my parents. It's been more than ten years and she's gone now, but I still use them daily and I think of her when I do.
When I was ill on my 29th birthday my friend helped arrange a sleepover for me.and I received the best gift from her: an email from Nalini wishing me a happy birthday and the promise of an ARC of her next book.I was very touched by her kindness at a difficult time
The best gift (I have a lot) I received was having friends around me when my mom died. I don't have family in Fort Worth, so having the gift of someone willing to be there for me is priceless.Patricia S
For my eighteenth birthday, a friend of mine gave me this scrawny little pine tree, barely a handspan high. We planted it in our garden, and now it's a beautifully grown tree, about shoulder high. Last year we turned it into an outdoor christmas tree for the first time. The lights looked so beautiful! Especially with the snow on it. The whole family loved watching the tree from the window at night. So pretty.
I could not find the last novel of the "Catherine series". Written by Catherine Benzoni. The few second hand bookstores I ask couldn't either. Then there was my birthday and I got a thick wrapped package from my husband. When I unwrapped it I held the wanted novel in my hands... -This was a true proof of love for me😂😗.
The best present was from my bff: my siter. When I was really ill during the scaut's camp, she saved for me the dumplings stuffed with strawberries and ate herself the other dish (which had really poor taste) because she wanted me to feel better <3
I have two. My parents bought me half a sewing machine (I paid the other half) for my 21st birthday, then when it gave up, my dad bought me a new one a couple of years ago. This time he refused to split the cost.About a month ago I received the most surprising piece of post - my great great aunt, who died about a year ago had left me a fairy large amount of money in her will. My mum says we visited her lots when I was was little, but I only remember meeting her once, at a wedding 14 years ago.
One of my dear friends committed suicide after struggling with strokes, and their family gave me a beautiful hand made bowl full of shells my friend had collected when they lived in Hawaii.
One year, I was in the hospital during Christmas. One of the hospital volunteers showed up in my room and gave me an aphgan. I still have and love it.
I actually haven't received it yet, but it will be very special. My daughter lives in Canada, above Montana, while I live in Indiana with her brother. They both had baby boys last year, 5 months apart. She is visiting us now and Friday we are getting family portraits done with the kids and grandkids and in laws. Last time a family pic was done was in Hawaii in 1999. Being a military family we are often far flung from each other, and it's usually impossible to attend reunions or get together with everyone at the same time.
My sister's love. My babies. Health. In a more down-to-earth manner, books, presents from my father.
Although the books are the best gift that I have received, any gift is special when it comes from someone whom you appreciate
My older sister detests opera, especially The Phantom of the Opera, but I absolutely love it. Phantom is one of my faves and it's coming to town soon. She bought tickets for both of us to attend. I'm going to enjoy myself, and she's going to suffer through. Just because she loves me...
Besides reading and writing, I love to do beadwork. One Christmas I was opening a gift from my father. Since mom bought all gifts, I was anxious to see what Dad went out of his way to give me. I was stunned to find a book on beadwork from Russia. It was a book I wanted, but hadn't been able to find. I blubbered my thanks as tears fell. At that moment, I knew how much Dad loved me. It's a memory I will always hold in my heart.
My sister wins the prize for most original gift in our family. She annotated a copy of "500 Places to take your children while they are still children" and gave it to my father. Inside she wrote memories of the places we had been and reasons why, preferences for places we should go next. It was both a compilation of family memories and a humorous demand to make more. She even crossed out a few as places not worth the effort.
