First Novels & Author Photos [Edited]

So people are posting excerpts from their very first novels. So far, I've seen these up at Gena Showalter's Weblog, Diana's Diversions, Jill Monroe's Blog and at Romancing Paradise (Lynn!).

I would love to join in the game but unfortunately, what may be the one and only copy of my first completed romance is currently under a desk an ocean away. (Though a friend of mine that I forced to read it might also have her own personal copy). I'm not even sure there's a surviving floppy disk. I wrote it straight out of high school. I was young. I didn't know about backing up. But it was set on a lush tropical island and the heroine had a broken leg. I still think that's a pretty good start. *g*

On a different note, what do you all think of the picture of me on the side of this blog? No, I'm not being needlessly vain. I'm thinking of using it as my new author photo. I was going to post a bigger copy but Blogger's throwing a fit. Will try to edit this post later today and add it in. But opinions?

[Edited to Add: And
here it is!]

Nalini... I think your pic on the left is cute.

As for first novels, the one novel I half finished had a heroine that would either get knocked on the head or faint whenever I needed a transition. LOL As I told Lynn (g) she would have had a very bad concussion by the end of the novel IF I had finished it. LOL

Thanks, Cynthia :)

You have to put up an excerpt of that novel - it sounds absolutely hysterical!

I like the picture, Nalini. You look like somebody I'd like to get to know, approachable and fun at the same time.

First novels... I'm still working on my first.

I like your pic, Nalini! I also like the official photo, but I think I like the close up head shot better. :)

Oooh, I'd love to see the first romance set on a tropical island. :) And the broken leg. LOL, Nora Roberts said she gave her heroine an injured foot or ankle or something in her first unsold novel. The hero had to carry her everywhere. ;)

It's cathartic to put up part of the first novel. It's even better to see other people's and to know you aren't the only one who wrote cliches. :)

I agree that Cynthia should post an excerpt. Especially one with the heroine getting knocked on the head. LOL.

Oh boy, it is your fault and Lynn's of course.. but I posted a small excerpt of my first incomplete novel. LOL ARGH!!!

Good luck with that first novel, Milady (romance?) and thanks for that lovely comment. Hey you're not that far from me geographically - who knows, we might actually meet one day! :)

Lynn - I didn't know that about Nora. Lol. Nice to know even geniuses started off somewhere!

Cynthia - I can't wait to read this. Am going to go check it out right now.

Lets see whether I can post now...

Yeah, it's not too far, depending on where I move to next year or the year after. I want to go to Japan though, I'm a foodie at heart and there are a lot of well-known French patisseries with branches in Tokyo.

It is all about the food.

Milady - Tokyo is a pretty wicked city but I don't think I could live there. People, people everywhere. Like you,
I'm a patisserie fan but I find Japanese cakes too light and fluffy. Give me a double-chocolate heavy-duty slab of a cake and I'm in heaven, but they don't seem to do those much here.

Next year I'll be in NZ if you head that way!

When my best pal sells her company and moves there, I'll visit you. LOL!

It's what I'd call a 'looking back' kinda picture, leaving a happy time behind for more happy times :)

Nalini Singh said...

Thanks, Anil! I love how you phrased that.

I think you look adorable.

Argh! No! I'm supposed to look sophisticated and writerly and all that stuff! *G*

It was fun to post that first work. The scary thing is, I think the second book I wrote (always buried way under the scary stuff under my bed) is A LOT worse!

Okay, so if you ever do get a hold of that first manuscript, will you post part?

Hi Jill! Hmmm, if I say that I will on this blog, is that like a binding vow? *G*
