Friday Book Club

It's book club time - all about recommending books you enjoyed.

My recs this week - two fabulous books coming out later this year, Blaze of Memory & Must Love Hellhounds. *grin* As you might guess from that completely unbiased rec, I've been doing galleys and copy edits this week ;-)

Okay, your turn, what are your recommendations?

I took an hour-long trip to the bookstore yesterday (very short, by my standards) and came home with 12 books, plus a Flip Dictionary I'd ordered. Although I haven't read it yet, I skimmed through a bit in the store and I have to say I'm looking forward to reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Hillarious!!!

I am reading Laurell K Hamilton's Skin Trade... loving it so far.

I've previously read Karen Chance's Cassandra Palmer Series, which was excellent, so I picked up Midnight's Daughter, also great. I can't wait for more.

Skin Trade was one of the books I brought home yesterday. I really like the Anita Black series, but I feel like in two or three of the books, plot is secondary to sex, which irritates me. Here's hoping Skin Trade is plot driven! (Although I'll probably continue to follow the series even if it isn't, because I'm hooked)

Silent Blade, the e-book short story by Ilona Andrews (samhain publising) was really twisted and good. Love Ilona's stuff.

Not a lot to rec at the moment. Too broke to buy anything new. Am going to book signing for Kim Harrion, Kelley Armstrong & 2 others tomorrow (Friday) night. Very excited! :)

I'm reading Shiloh Walker's Hunter's Edge. So far it's good. Great Series.

Just discovered Jessica Andersen's Mayan mythology series, the first was Nightkeeper and the one I'm reading now is Dawnkeeper. Love this series. Who knew Mayan blood sacrifice culture could become such a great series?

I am having an Alyssa Day rich week with her novels of Warriors Of Poseidon. I'm in Atlantis Unleashed and loving it so far. Love the way she portrays her heroine's, how she moves her overall plot along and the men, chocolate ~addictive, rich Belgium chocolate~ and can't wait to dive in to my favorite, Alexios' story: Atlantis Unmasked.

Ok, stepping off my soapbox right now LOL

Hi Nalini-I'm going to go with both books I reviewed last. Yasmine Galenorn's Demon Mistress and Dakota Cassidy's Kiss & Hell. Demon Mistress was pretty amazing if you enjoy getting lost in an author's world. Kiss & Hell was wonderful and has the ability to make you laugh out loud while you're reading it. When do i get to review something from you again? :)

I read your "Desert Warrior" this week and I loved it!! Thought it would be good to pass the time till branded by fire but it was so much better than a time filler. I recommend it to everyone. I really loved Tariq (especially when he kidnapt her right away from the airport - don´t loose time^^) I noticed that you called him a "panther" very often...can it be you had your changelings in mind already?

Currently I am reading "burning wild" by christine feehan and i really do enjoy it. it´s so much better than the other ones although i would like to shake Jake a bit!

Nalini Singh said...

PR - review copies have all already gone out for Branded I'm afraid.

Julia - that's quite funny. I looked through Desert Warrior recently and I noticed the panther references too, so maybe I was meant to write about changelings... *grin*

I'm re-reading an ARC I got Cold Moon Rising by CT Adams and Cathy Clamp - it's the next book in their Sazi series and it's about Tony. And it's gooood!!

Not reading too much else right now since I'm waiting impatiently for Skin Trade and Scarlet to get here.

Oh, and speaking of panthers, there's a comment about them and jaguars in Cold Moon Rising.

I bought a lot of books recently and already read an old one by Iris Johansen (Everlasting) and The Third Circle by Amanda Quick. Both were finished in no time and for me that's the best recommendation there is. Currently I'm reading Eternal Craving by Nina Bangs and Dark Summer by Iris Johansen (one at home and one for in the train on my way to the office). Both will probably be finished this weekend because my Saturday is completely free!

In my TBR pile there are books by Lynsay Sands, Jackie Collins, Michele Beardsley and a couple more.

And Julia, I'm waiting for Burning Wild to arrive. I ordered it recently so it should be here any time now. I'm really curious about this book and I almost can't wait!

Very busy week so I didn't get a lot of time. But I was able to read:

Eternal Pleasure/Nina Bangs-Loved
Eternal Craving/Nina Bangs-Liked
Demon Can't Help It/Kathy Love-Liked
Sebastian/Anne Bishop-Loved

I'm a quarter of the way through Salt and Silver by Anna Katherine and I'm not liking it very much. Maybe it'll pick up later.

This week I finished off a couple of books I wouldn't recommend.

Just started Norse Code by Greg van Eekhout. I think I'm going to really like this one. It reminds me of American Gods by Neil Gaiman, which I loved (also loved NG's The Graveyard Book and would highly recommend it, written for kids but you wouldn't know it.)

I just finished Skin Trade on Wednesday (Laurell K Hamilton). I have to say I think it is one of my favourite Anita books! I am so glad that she is moving away from the over the top sex! lol Not that I didn't enjoy them! ;) lol

I also just finished Red by Jordan Summers. Another excellent book, and I can't wait to pick up Scarlet (out NOW) and Crimson (out November).

I got a bunch of books in the mail yesterday. The one I'm most looking forward to is Ashes of Midnight by Lara Adrian. I've loved Andreas since we met him and the excerpt was fascinating.

@ Rianne

Burning Wild is great! It took amazon quite a while to bring it to me but it was worth every second! Fever wasn´t very good but Burning wild makes up to it.

Who doesn't love fairy-tales, right? Lately it looks like all the fairytale/myth based books out there are pretty serious and while I'm a big fan it can get a little much after a while. Shanna Swendson writes a brilliant, light-hearted series that has you laughing and sympathising with the heroine (I sympathise with her at any rate) and swooning over the hero. It's not dark or tormented, it's light and funny with a favourite character from the Arthurian legend thrown so it makes a nice change. Her books are Enchanted Inc, Once Upon Stilletos, Damsel Under Stress and Don't Hex with Texas. Don't Hex With Texas isn't quite as good as the first 3 books but her writing standard and style is pretty engaging so it doesn't bother you at all.

Come to think of it,I think I might've recommended her before...

Hi, everyone! I love talking romance novels and I love Nalini Singh's books, as well.
What I'm reading now is Loretta Chase's 'Lord of Scoundrels'. It's very good so far and I have a feeling it's gonna be great!

I've recently read Salt and Silver by Anna Katherine and it was excellent (even though the title wasn't appealing)and HOT. A book that belongs in your to read list.

Only about one month left till Mercy's book. And more to Must Love Hellhounds and Blaze of Memory. *groans* It was a mistake to get addicted (in an awesome way) to Nalini's books.

Courtney - I finished Ashes of Midnight yesterday. It is SOOOO good! I was at first a bit uncertain about Andreas and how it would go, but I was warmly and excitedly wrong, it's fantastic! For those unfamiliar, its the (I think) 6th book in the Midnight Breed series by Lara Adrian. Great vampire romance series.

I just started the Children of the Sea series by Virginia Kantra. Her first book, Sea Witch, is really good so far. I'm about halfway through and I'm really enjoying the characters, flow and pace of the plot, and the mythology. It's based on the legends of the selkies.

Just finished A Hunger Like No Other to start off the 'Immortals After Dark' series. Soooo good!

Just started Dawnkeepers - I loved Nightkeepers so I'm psyched. (Chez - Agreed!)

Getting ready to start Atlantis Unleashed - I loved the first 2 'Warriors of Poseidon' books.
Excitement building...

Una:

I read Virginia Kantra's short story - Sea Crossing - about the selkies in the Shifter anthology.

The writing was warm and really drew me in. I'll put Sea Witch on my TBR list.

Thanks!

I just finished Reforming a Rake by Suzanne Enoch. It's my first book by her and won't be the last. The book was hilarious, it was so good!

Pam P said...

Tabith, that was a good Enoch, my favorites are London's Perfect Scoundrel, and her latest, Always a Scoundrel.

Read McAlister's Fortune by Alissa Johnson, very good, part road romance with just the two together and the witty bantering. Very good, great couple together.

Also, I lked A Hint of Wicked by Jennifer Haymore, a love triangle, but she makes it works, emotionally bittersweet at the end, but not with any of the 3 bitter. Will be reading more from her.

lol nalini, those are already on my CWTBR pile (that's Can't Wait To Be Read) ;)

My rec is Atlantis Unleashed by Alyssa Day and
Witch Fury by Anya Bast :)

Went to a book signing tonight for Kim Harrison, Kelley Armstrong, & two other authors (unknown to me). Never read Kelley before and bought basically her entire backlist.

Kim is awesome. The whole group was great! Funny, interesting and very entertaining. Will be blogging about it tomorrow...with pics. I'm exhausted and my back/feet are killing me!

Missed my Friday post. I had a good week. Re-read Flowers from the Storm by Laura Kinsale and loved it just as much as I did the first time. :)

Finally finished The Madness of Ian Mackenzie and liked the romance. Lovely hero and heroine in that one.

And from the books I read, the other one I liked was Dial Emmy for Murder by Eileen Davidson. The soap opera mystery I started last week. It was a fun, fast, light read with quirky characters. Nice.

Hilcia said...

Sorry, Nalini I wanted to say...

LOLOL! You MUST know that both your recommendations are already on my list of books I and most of us CAN'T wait to read. :-)

Just recently finished "The Trouble with Demons" by Lisa Shearin (3rd book of the Raine Benares series)and I loved it. Lots of action, lots of intrigue. I also just finished "Magic in the Blood" by Devon Monk (1st book of the Allie Beckstrom series) and really enjoyed that. Now I'm working on Skin Trade by LKH and I'm hoping that we get a little more plot and a little less sex. :)

I read this week something about an "wolf" with "scars" (To refer to Julias "panther" and to refer to some of your descriptions of Marc in "Craving Beauty".)*g* and - of course - I enjoyed Hira`s story.

Soullumination - that's how I stumbled across her as well, I read Shifter and was impressed with the short story.

I've also read the Alyssa Day Warriors of Poseidon series and I'm eagerly waiting for my copy of Atlantis Unleashed from the library.

Well, This week like every other has been a re-read week---but more so than most, as I have been working intensely and needed to concentrate on some tough personnel reviews. So I had to keep it light and just stuck to some of my favorites: Angel's Blood, His Majesty's Dragon, Lover Revealed/unbound/avenged, Slave to Sensation, Cast in Shadow/Courtlight/secret/fury, Angel's Pawn (the newbie this week for me), Magic Burns/Bites/Strikes, Norse Code, Desire Unchained, Midwinter, Sarah's Seduction, and Need.
I thought that was enough, but of course it is never enough and I don't know how many times I have walked past the shelves and grabbed a new unread (as of yet) book and then had to smack my own hands for being naughty and lectured myself to get back to work!
Oh well, maybe I can get back to my reading in two weeks time...
