Friday Book Club

It's time to talk books, books, books!

I read a debut book this week - Marilyn Brant's According to Jane and loved it! I first heard about this story when I had coffee with Marilyn the year this book (then a manuscript) won the Golden Heart Award - so seeing it in print was really lovely.

According to Jane is the story of Ellie Barnett, who one day in English class, suddenly starts hearing Jane Austen's voice in her head, giving commentary/advice on her life. The book follows Ellie as she grows up, tries to find love, and perhaps even herself.

It's a warm, witty and emotional book and gets a definite thumbs up from me. If you want to check out an excerpt, click the link.

What are you reading and loving this week?

I haven't been here the last few weeks, not a lot of reading for fun (life seems to get in the way).

I did read Bengals Heart since my last post. All I can say is I can NOT wait for Jonas' book to come out! Next year simply can not come soon enough! (Even better, and more agonizing to wait for, is Hawke's book...).

I read Blaze of Memory as well. Fantastic work, Nalini! I am never disappointed in your writing! I can not wait for the next Psy/Changeling book (especially Hawke & Sienna!) and Archangel's kiss!!!!

I have a few in my TBR pile I'm itching to read, especially the next House of Night book, but I decided to save it for my plane ride in a few weeks. Something to do for the first few hours, at least.

The Hot Zone: A Terrifying True Story by Richard Preston. I found it in my parents dusty bookshelf while organizing and dusting it for them and borrowed it. Really good. And last night I finally picked up Don't Judge a Girl by her Cover by Ally Carter and stayed up reading it really late, lol.

I read the final book in the Gardella series - As Shadows Fade - by Colleen Gleason. I thought it was a good book, but...I'm upset about the 'ending' for the third person in the love triangle...I just feel like what happened to him wasn't....fair, which I know sounds weird.

And I've just started reading Men of the Otherworld, by Kelley Armstrong.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

I've got Anna Campbell's new book, "Captive of Sin." I usually tear through hers, but this one's taken me awhile. The pacing's fine and I like both characters and the plot (runaway heiress meets war-scarred hero) so I'm not sure what the problem is. Could be the holiday weekend slowing me down.

Hunting Ground by Pat Briggs. I am in love with Bran I swear my husband is getting a run for his money. XP Bran would so kick Jacob's ass.

I am reading the "The Well of Echo" series by Ian Irvine right now. Got the first one in the libary and of course part 2 and 3 were borrowed. Whoever did that to me deserved payback so I borrowed part 4 although I really cannot read it before the other ones. Yes, I get mean when I can´t finish a series! Besides that I read all "in death" books I can get my hands on in the libary.
@Fuarie Ai: i know exactly what you mean, Bran is great! Like Charles better, though and Jacob, hmmm, I believe you are right here:-)

Hi Nalini!
I'm a huge fan of your books and can't wait for the next release date. That excerpt from max's book was such a tease.

Anyways, i was wondering if you-or anyone else- could recommend some really good paranormal romance series to me as i wait for your next book. I have read most of the dark-hunter series by sherrilyn kenyon, all of robin d owens heart books, some of the breeds books, all the argeneau vampire series by lynsay sands, some of the dark series by christine feehan, her leopard series too, um among others i cant think of right now.

Anyway for a long while i was really into the vampire thing but i think what I'm looking for now is another good shapeshifter series like your changelings. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a ton!

I'm reading lots of stuff right now. I've been purging books and came across some books I forgot I had. Whoops!

Orannia-THANK YOU! Man, I thought I was the only one who hated the ending for you-know-who. Pissed me off something fierce. I never reviewed the book because the end made me so mad. Eh, oh well.

@ Natasha N.,
do you know the "Nightcreature" series by Lori Handeland (first book in the series is "Blue Moon")? It's about werewolves, so not exactly about shapeshifters, but a really good paranormal romance series without vampires :) I'm reading the fourth book of the series right now and I think it's great!

Sylvia - The Hot Zone is fantastic. I read it when it came out and still have my copy.

Natasha - hmmm, it looks like you've read quite a few series already.

Below are some recs - not shifters, just general recommendations you can investigate and see if you like.

This series is not paranormal romance but more dark fantasy with romance, but most pnr readers love it - the Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop. First book is Daughter of the Blood. You might want to try that and see if suits - it is super dark, however.

I also love Meljean Brook's Guardians (Demon Angel is book 1). She has heaps of excerpts on her website if you want to try.

Patricia Briggs' and Ilona Andrews' series both have shifters, but they're urban fantasy rather than pnr.

Also, if you click the Good Books tag on the bottom of this post, you'll see other books we've talked about (including in the comments).
