The interactions between the Archangel Raphael and Elena are fraught with tension and heat from beginning to end. Raphael is powerful, ruthless, frightening and one sexy Archangel. Elena is a strong, talented, hardheaded, vulnerable, frightened and sexy Vampire Hunter... Together, they make for
an explosive combination.

Ms. Singh has done an excellent job of combining the best of both worlds, Urban Fantasy and Romance with this installment. I am more than looking forward to the next one!

But when he mockingly challenges Shadoe to strip just for him, he finds out there’s more to the surprisingly sexy agent than by-the-book rules and Government Issue pantsuits.

After a few experiences in dysfunctional magic, Tammy turns to the only one who can help; the very rich and highly magical, Bryn Lyons. yield to his savage, sensual rage.

Zurael fears nothing except being called and bound to a human’s will. He intends to kill Aisling after she’s served as bait to find an enemy in possession of an ancient tablet. But the more he tastes of her innocent spirit, the more he’ll use his fiery touch and seductive whispers to keep her hungry for his mercy—even as they weave an erotic spell that he cannot escape…

Here's the blurb:
Eternity has become a prison for Ajax Petrakos. Centuries after he and his Spartan brothers made their bargain for immortality, Ajax struggles to maintain his warrior’s discipline. His only source of strength is his hope that he will soon meet the woman once foretold to him—the other half of his soul, Shay Angel.

Ajax searches for his destined mate on the haunted streets of modern-day Savannah, but he isn’t the first to find her. Shay, the youngest of a powerful demon-hunting clan, can see the monsters that stalk the steamy Southern night—an ability that draws the deadly attention of Ajax’s worst enemy.

You can read an excerpt on Deidre's website. The next book in the series, Red Kiss comes out June!

Today's entry question comes from Shari C:
I think we all have our favorite hero/heroine, but what about a memorable villain. Who do you think has been the meanest and most evil person that you have read about and why?

I'll go with Iago from Shakespeare's Othello. Iago was just so evil - more so because he made himself appear Othello's friend, then betrayed him.

Angels' Blood Countdown: Elizabeth Vaughan - White Star ARC

Winner: The random numbers have spoken and the winner of the Elizabeth Vaughan ARC is Blodeuedd!
________________

Only 13 days to the release of ANGELS' BLOOD, and 7 to the release of ANGELS' PAWN!

Here's what Darcy, one of the readers who won an ARC had to say about ANGELS' BLOOD:
This series is one of the most original things I've ever read. I've never heard anything close to Nalini's take on angels and vampires, and I'm in love with the rules of this world. The characters are strong and memorable (even the ones you have a love/hate relationship with), the story is extremely intense with all kinds of twists and turns, and the romance is HOT!

...It's a must read!
Today's countdown prize is an ARC of Elizabeth Vaughan's White Star. I haven't had a chance to check out this new series yet, but I loved Ms Vaughan's Warprize!

White Star will release in April this year. Here's the blurb:
The Lady High Priestess Evelyn, known as Evie to her friends, is a healer, dedicated to using her magic in the service of the goddess to aid others and give strength where it is needed.

Orrin Blackheart couldn't be more different. With his black armour, a black name and a blacker reputation, he's been feared and hated in equal parts. So on his defeat and capture in battle, the Goddesses insistence that Evie saves him from a death sentence astonishes them both - as does the growing attraction between them.

But in saving Orrin Evie condemns herself to a prohibition on her magic and a penance posting on the edges of the land, while to retain his salvation Orrin must battle a spreading plague across the land. Fate clearly has plans for them both - but to fulfill them, both must survive the perils ahead.
How gorgeous is that cover?

Today's entry question comes from kh:
Which hero would you like to be stranded with on an island?

Chance to win an early copy of ANGELS' BLOOD

Kenda at Lurv A La Mode has put up her (awesome) review of ANGELS' BLOOD as well as an interview with me. There are two copies of ANGELS' BLOOD up for grabs! Her contest closes Feb 22nd.

Infamous playboy James Graham, First Marquis of Montrose, doesn’t know what to make of the strange woman who’s stumbled into his life. Her accent may be foreign, but Magda plays golf and rides like a red-blooded Scotsman—not that James could ever mistake her succulent lips and curves for anything but deliciously female…\

_________________

14 days to go till the release of ANGELS' BLOOD, and only 8 until the release of ANGELS' PAWN!

Here's what Errant Dreams Reviews had to say about ANGELS' BLOOD:
This is one of those books that so soaked into my pores that I couldn’t get it out of my head for the rest of the day after I’d finished it. I couldn’t open another book for at least a day, as I didn’t want to supplant it yet. I highly recommend this one!
Today's first countdown prize is an ARC of Gena Showalter's The Vampire's Bride, part of her series set in Atlantis! Check out the blurb below:
Return to Gena Showalter’s mythical world of immortals, magic and dark seduction…return to Atlantis…

Wary of love, the beautiful Amazon wants nothing to do with the tormented vampire. Yet there’s no denying their consuming desire every time he nears her. Neither trusts the other—nor can they survive alone.

For in an impossible game of the gods’ devising, they’ve been trapped on an island, about to face the ultimate challenge: surrender to the passion that will bind them forever…or be doomed to an eternity apart.
The Vampire's Bride releases March, and you can read more about it on Gena's website!

Today's entry question is from Amy: If you use an e-book reader, which do you use and why? My addition - if you don't use an e-book reader, are you interested in getting one?

Angels' Blood Countdown: Angela Knight - Guardian ARC

Winner: The random numbers have spoken, and the winner of the Guardian ARC is: Ilona! Congratulations!!
___________________________________________

It's 15 days till the release of ANGELS' BLOOD and only 9 days till ANGELS' PAWN hits the e-shelves!!

Here's what Kati Dancy for Romance Novel TV has to say about Angels' Blood:

The new series delivers on every level, building an incredibly complex, dark world..the romance is strong (and very hot), but the character driven world building is the book’s strongest asset. There are a multitude of secondary characters whose stories I’d like to see told, so all I can do is implore Nalini Singh to write faster! I feel sure that I’ll end up re-reading this book over and over waiting for the next entry in the Guild Hunter series.
Onto the extravaganza! We're going to kick it off with the giveaway of an ARC I so want to steal! Guardian is the next book in Angela Knight's fantastic Time Hunters series. (Click on the Angela Knight tag at the bottom of this post to read about Warrior, the first book).

Guardian releases on May 2nd. Here's the blurb:
Riane Arvid is a superhuman cop from the future, trapped in the year 2009 by group of murderous fanatics called the Xeran.

Nick Wyatt is a handsome twentyfirst century warrior who has been a target of the Xeran his entire life. He's the only one Riane can turn to, but his intentions are as mysterious as his origins. In an attempt to discover the truth about each other, both Riane and Nick decide seduction is the best tactic.
Today's entry question comes from Tinuke: Do you sneak peek at the end of the story or are those fighting words?

I admit it, I've been known to peek!

Contest Clues

So for this contest, there are going to be posts up every day, and I'm thinking we should make things interesting and ask everyone to answer a question to enter.

What are some questions you'd like to ask your fellow readers? Here are some I came up with:
  • Where do you like to read?
  • Do you think breaking the spine of a book is part of reading or is it sacrilege?
  • If you could have your wicked way with one paranormal creature, what would you choose?
I need more questions, so suggestions welcome!

And as for those clues...what do Blue Diablo, Riding on Instinct, Magic Strikes, Ghostland, Eve of Darkness, and Nauti Intentions have in common?

Contest Coming Soon...

Top 10 List: TV Couples

Zara tagged me with this one -check out her list here. I agree with several on her list (including Malcolm & Inara, and Buffy & Angel), but I decided to use the "little gray cells" as Poirot would say and come up with ten new couples for us to discuss.

Oooh, just as I was about working on this, Orannia tagged me, too. Her list is here.

Onto my list - in completely random order.

1. Booth & Temperance

They're smart, they're funny, and they've got that zing between them. I like that they're friends first - everything else comes after. Though if you want to study sexual tension, Bones is the show to watch.
2. Gambit & Rogue (or where Nalini proves her geek credentials)

I used to wake up ridiculously early on Saturday mornings to watch X-Men. Gambit was my favorite. I loved the whole "he can't kiss or touch her or she'll suck out his lifeforce" thing - talk about conflict!

3. Laura Holt & Remington Steele

I loved this show. I would watch reruns if the powers that be decided to put them on. Hmm, I see a similarity to Temperance and Booth - Laura and Remington are also a smart & funny couple. But they had they own unique chemistry going on.

4.
Allison & Joe

They're so normal and real, and yet the love between them is not something you ever question. One of my favorite episodes is when Joe thinks something has happened to Allison, and when they find her, he literally falls on his knees and just holds her.

5.
Spike and Buffy
Okay, I know I said I liked Angel and Buffy, but I also kind of have a soft spot for Spike, too.

6. Wash & Zoe

I liked that these two were in love and so settled about it (ignore the other two guys in the picture *grin*). There were no huge scenes, but you knew they'd do anything for each other. (p.s. you that that thing that happens in Serenity? I've wiped it from my memory).

7. JD & Turk

A million reasons, including - The World's Most Giant Doctor and Hide the Saltine. I miss Scrubs.

8. Charlie & Amita Two really smart people, with a great relationship! I like how at the start, Charlie is the more shy of the pair.

9. Elizabeth & Darcy

You didn't think I was going to miss Lizzie and Darcy out? In NZ, they played the original tv series one episode every Sunday. I sat through six torturous weeks to see these two get their happy ending!

10. Mulder & Skully
Chemistry among creepiness!

I think a lot of people have already been tagged with this, so I'm throwing it open to anyone who wants to play. Who are your favorites?

I got this cover image from Fantastic Fiction, but my copy pretty much looks the same. It's bedraggled with love. :-)

The Time Is Short was first published in 1958. The copy I have is the Mills & Boon Classics edition, which was published in 1975. I'm fairly certain this book is very difficult to get hold of, but if you ever do see a copy, grab it and run.

Why do I love this book? It's hard to say - I don't even remember how it got into my hands, but I just know that I've never forgotten the story, and I've never even considered giving it away. It's an absolute and utter keeper.

Here's the backcover blurb:
"Love comes swiftly, at the first meeting....There is an attraction that grows undeniably stronger until it is a fire inside. You do not believe in love like that?"

Morgana had never been in love like that, and, hearing Felipe's words, she knew that now she never could be, that even if such a love did come her way, she must somehow find the strength to withstand it. For, knowing that the future could not give her the same things as it did to others, she now found herself in the very situation he wished to avoid.
Since the backcover blurb doesn't tell you the reason Morgana can't let herself fall in love, I will. Don't worry, it's not a spoiler - you find out in the first few pages. She has an area of pressure in her brain (as a result of an accident) that is inoperable. She's been given 3 months to live.

Through a mix of circumstance and choice, she ends up nursing an older lady on the island of Jumasa. Portugal has sovereignity over the island, but Jumasa's undisputed master is the Marquez Felipe Manuel Ruiz de Aliviro Rialta, for whom Morgana immediately develops an irrational dislike. Sparks fly from day one.

The characters are all very well fleshed out, and I particularly like how we get to see Felipe through his actions, such as what he does for the people of the island. I also like that Morgana, while a wonderful, sympathetic character who is determined to live her last months to the full, isn't perfect, that she does give in to bitterness at times because of what fate has stolen from her.

In some ways, it's a very traditional M&B, with a wealthy, exotic hero, and a heroine who is a fish out of water. But in other ways, it's very different. The first thing I noticed when I recently reread it is how many more secondary characters there were, which reflects the longer length. The book is 188 pages of dense text - I'd say around 75k words at least.

But more than that, there is an indefinable "something" about The Time Is Short that sets it apart.

It's a fairytale - in a beautiful place. It's full of emotion (and even a villain you'll love to hate), and an ending that makes my heart sigh each time I read it. In the end, I think I love this book because it's pure, unashamed romance.

Cover: An Enchanted Season & Angels' Pawn Release Date

I've got a confirmed release date for ANGELS' PAWN, the Guild Hunter e-special. It'll be releasing February 24th, so put that down in your diaries! It'll be available at all the usual ebook stores, plus in Kindle format.

~

This cover, for the mass market edition of An Enchanted Season, really needs no words, but I have to give them to you - I am in love with it. Serious, mad love. Not only is that an orchid on the cover (so important in Beat of Temptation), it's an orchid that only blooms in December. I *heart* the Art Department.

The mass market edition releases November.

Branded By Fire Copy Edits

I keep finding conversations that make me grin. Here's one.

“I’ll take that under advisement, Mélisande.”

Mercy barely stopped herself from slamming on the brakes. “Who told you that?” She needed to know who to dismember.

He snorted. “I ran the background check on you.”

“What?”

“Did you think SnowDancer was sitting on its ass while you cats set up your territory here?”

Given that she’d done some spying of her own, she couldn’t exactly argue with that. But—“That name is off-limits. On pain of death.”

“I’m quaking in my boots, pussycat.”

She screamed. “Why do you live to aggravate me? Why?”

Point to Riley methinks *grin*

Angels' Blood Advanced Copy Contest

CONTEST NOW CLOSED

ANGELS' BLOOD releases March 3, 2009, and to celebrate the release, I'm giving away some advanced copies of the book. These will be in the form of bound galleys - identical to an ARC in terms of content, just put together in a different way.

Here are the rules for the contest:

1. One entry per household.

2. Since the purpose of an advanced copy is to get the word out about a book prior to its release, if you win one, please review / talk about / discuss ANGELS' BLOOD somewhere during February 2009. You can review it online, talk about it to your book group, tell your friends…the field’s wide open. What you say is, of course, totally up to you!

3. By entering, you give me permission to announce your name in my newsletter and on my blogs should you win. (I usually stick to first names and initials).

Details on how to Enter

4. Email me at nalinisinghwrites @ gmail.com (without the spaces) by January 15th, 2009 (Midnight, PST), with:

a. "AB Advanced Copy Contest" in the Subject line
b. Your name and postal address
c. The place(s) where you intend to talk about / review / discuss the book etc

5. Winners will be notified by email (so please make sure my email is on your “safe” list).

Good luck!!

Working, working...

Have copy edits. Have book due. Must work like fiend. Blog posts may slow down a little.

But I do have one question for you all - my inbox is currently all out of reader interviews (both the originals and the ones focusing on keeper books). Would you guys like to continue seeing some kind of reader interview featured on the blog? If so, what type of things would you like to ask your fellow readers?

Okay, back to work now :-)

Black Magic Woman - Justin Gustainis

This is the first book in the "Quincey Morris Supernatural Investigations" series, and I tell you, I'm hooked!

Here's the blurb (from the author's website):
Occult investigator Quincey Morris and his "consultant", white witch Libby Chastain, are hired to free a family from a deadly curse that appears to date back to the Salem witch trials.

Fraught with danger, the trail finds them stalking the mysterious occult underworlds of Boston, San Francisco, New Orleans, and New York, searching out the root of the curse. After surviving a seris of terrifying attempts on their lives, the two find themselves drawn inexorably towards Salem itself—the very heart of darkness.
I'd put this book in the thriller with a touch of horror category. There's no romance element, but if you enjoy urban fantasy, I think you'll enjoy this. Quincey & Libby are both smart, likeable characters, and the world is brilliantly realized.

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on
Evil Ways, the second book in the series, very soon.

Totally recommended!

Anyone else read it? Thoughts? Other recommendations from your holiday reading?

Wolfsbane and Mistletoe

I managed to read this in between writing - it's an excellent anthology to "snack" on if you haven't got time to read a full-length book.

The stories are of various lengths (I think the shortest is 5, but most come in around 20-30 pages) and written around the theme of werewolves and Christmas. I loved all the stories - each author's voice is unique and the stories cover the spectrum from dark to laugh out loud funny.

If you'd like more details, check out this post at Darque Reviews, which has a short blurb for each story.

Definitely recommended.

Did you all do any reading over Christmas? Any recommendations?

North and South

I have to thank all the bloggers (especially KristieJ), who posted about North and South. I ADORED it!

If you loved the BBC's adaptation of
Pride and Prejudice, I think you'll love this, too. It's an adaption of Elizabeth Gaskell's novel by the same name.

The cast is fantastic - but I have to give a special mention Richard Armitage. Wow! I particularly liked how his character had all these layers that we got to see bit by bit.

I borrowed this from my local library, but I think I'm going to have to get my own copy. Those final scenes...sigh.

Have you seen it? Thoughts?

CindyW tagged me with the Bookworm Award. Thanks Cindy!

Here's how it works: Open the book closest to you, not your favorite or most intellectual book, but the book closest to you at the moment, to page 56. Write out the fifth sentence, as well as two to five sentences following there.

The war wreaked serious damage to the building, but even greater damage was wreaked by the flood of 1966 when many of the sacred books (Tora) were lost.
