Hello my lovely readers. Today, I'd like to host a special Friday Book Club, focusing on your favorite reads by Black authors. Here are three recent ones of mine to start us off!
And if you haven't yet tried any of the authors mentioned in this thread (or in the comments), please do give them a go - there are some amazing stories out there that don't always get the spotlight.
Rafe by Rebekah Weatherspoon (the author describes this is as a "Buff Male Nanny" book and it definitely is!)
Real Men Knit by Kwana Jackson (Four brothers inherit their mother's knitting shop and the resulting story is both about family, and about falling in love. I loved this book so much I gave it a publicity quote).
The A.I. Who Loved Me by Alyssa Cole (this is an awesome SF romance that asks the question...what if the hot guy next door is actually the A.I. next door? I listened to this in audio and it's a fantastic production, but the ebook is now also out).
I could keep going, but I'll hand it over to you now! Fill the thread with recs for your faves! 💕

I have to admit, I'm not very cognizant of who the authors that write most of the books I read are. Gender, ethnicity, nationality, or anything else, only sometimes enters my awareness. (It probably should more, but I'm not much of a people person, so I tend to focus more on the story I'm reading than on who wrote it. Half the time, I probably couldn't even tell you the name, without looking it up - on the cover.)
However, one that did stick out for me when I read it, (as much because it turned out to be a different type of story than anticipated, much to my delight) and comes to mind off the top of my head, is Brown Girl in the Ring by Nalo Hopkinson.
I love the Bourbon Brothers series for Harlequin Desire by Reese Ryan. (Savannah's Secrets, The Billionaire’s Legacy, and Engaging the Enemy so far, but book 4, A Reunion of Rivals, will be out in July). In addition to the wonderful stories, her covers are gorgeous!
Another author I enjoy is Therese Beharrie. She has written several books for Harlquin Romance and has a contemporary series called One Day to Forever with Carina. The first book is A Wedding One Christmas.
I am looking forward to reading L Penelope's Earthsinger Chronicles. I own all of the ones released so far, but have been waiting to start them until closer to book 3's release in August. The series starts with Song of Blood & Stone. If you don't want fantasy romance, she also has a contemporary series with a touch of paranormal called The Cupid Guild (these are short stories/novellas) as well as a paranormal series with angels. In addition she has a delightful weekly podcast called My Imaginary Friends where she talks about her writing, what she's watching, etc. that I love.
N. K. Jemisin and her Inheritance series and Broken Earth series. Both excellent reads.
I've read L. Penelope's Song of Blood & Stone but still haven't gotten to the second book of the series - and didn't realize the third already had a release date and that it was so close! And I also see there's a second novella out now too.
But, I have to agree with Kim, I don't usually pay attention to the race/nationality/sex of my authors (though at times it's evident with the author's name, but I'm not going to lose interest in them just because of that!). I'm just looking for a good story. :)
I love Alexa Martin's Playbook series which starts with Intercepted. Get a Life Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert is another great read.
I do try and purchase books written by POCs and which feature non white characters. I think it's important to actively support a diversity of authors.
I love Theodora Taylor's books: she writes heart-warming interracial romance novels.
ALL of Beverly Jenkins' books. Some are romances, some are less romance but more stories, and every one of them will teach you more about Black History than you every learned in school.
I loved Wanna Bet by Talia Hibbert and the Some Girls Do series by May Sage are among my favorite contemporary romance novels. Excellent writers and really great stories.
I'm a big fan of Regine Abel's Xian Warriors series. I'm pretty sure Regine is black, but honestly, there are almost no pictures of her online. So, I'm not positive. But I definitely enjoy the diversity of the characters in her stories. She really celebrates the differences.
Just noticed on my library's ebook and audiobook app, one of their latest spotlights is "Intergalactic Love Stories" described as "Romantic Science Fiction stories that will transcend the limits of love." The A.I. That loved me is the first suggestion, and Alpha Night is the second! (listed as 'coming soon')... Off to investigate further.
I loved Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert, and am eagerly awaiting Dani's story.
I read all of Holley Trent’s paranormal fiction, and some of her contemporary stuff too, it is imaginative and off the wall fun! And on a women of colour note, Rebecca Roanhorse writes really excellent books too (she was a finalist for the Hugo and Nebula awards good). I’m waiting for the third book in the Sixth World series...
