(And yep, it was excruciating stopping at just five!)

Oh YES! And to that I would add JAK's Lost Colony series, which I think came out about a decade prior to the St. Helen's series. Futuristic space opera-esque romance?
I've read here there be monsters and really liked it but reluctant to try another series I'm reading six already good thing they don't come out all at once :)
I've read all your recommendations at least three times and they really are fantastic books.
Although, in case of Naked in Death and Daughter of the Blood, when I start reading those, I usually start reading all other books in the series as well....
I love Ann Bishop's Black Jewels trilogy!
And The Pern series!
I love any book rec posts from Nalini- that's how I ended up reading Laura Florand. :)
I've read 3 out of 5 authors in the list. I love reading and re-reading the In Death series. I started with Conspiracy in Death when it first came out thinking that was a new author. I liked it so much I got the beginning books before Conspiracy in Death (original covers---don't say "Nora Roberts" on the cover). I love reading Jayne Castle's Harmony and Lost Colony series. The Pern series by Anne McCaffery I couldn't get into very much. I really like her book Restoree.
Awesome list! I've read (and reread) every book on the list except Daughter of the Blood. I will have to give it a try - the reviews are so polarized I know it will be intense. :)
Anonymous@7:25AM: The Pern series is more classic fantasy than romance (the romance is very light when it is there at all). If you are looking for more like Restoree you might like her Talents series. Start with The Rowan.
Technically there are three that come before that (To Ride Pagasus/Pegasus in Flight/Pegasus in Space) but those are also romance-light and focus on multiple characters, not just one specific hero/heroine. They are really good, but The Rowan is the one that really captured my interest so that is the one I recommend. :)
Erin Burns - Love the Lost Colony books too! I think I have them in the original covers. :)
Vorpaks - The Talent series is awesome!
Vorpaks - I know all about the Pern series since other members of my family like the books. I'm just not that interested in them. :) I read the Rowan a long time ago and it was fine.

Terrific list. Earlier, you put me on to Meljean B. and Anne Bishop's BLACK JEWELS series. They're superb. Pern...yes, we've discussed this, and I couldn't agree more. As you noted, falling in love with a world means almost as much as falling in love with a character. And let's not forget F'lar, Lessa and the Harper. McCaffrey, and all her worlds, rocks. Now, I've got to dive into Jayne Castle's books!
